About this listen

Returning from his time in the cities’s militia, Ajax comes to find out his village was destroyed and his mentor was injured due to the whims of a spoiled noble. He knows there is nothing that can be done, as he is now, but luckily for him a dungeon nearby offers the perfect opportunity to train before heading to the Capital.

But once he gets there what will he find? A way to heal his mentor? Support to grow even stronger? Nobles who want to use him for their own ends? Maybe all of the above.

A worthy 4 star rating

Book 2 has Ajax still moving through the "coming of age" phase of the series and eventually moving from his small village to join the adventurer's guild to team up with an existing adventures to clear a low-level dungeon first couple of floors. The dungeon floor clearing is a bit odd and the leveling mechanics somewhat obscure but the monster battles and team interplay is interesting, even given Ajax's OP capability due to his elusive and limitless skill acquisitions.

Along the way he finds himself conscripted into a territory resource dispute where his drive to become stronger has him solo-leveling monsters well above his level by using creative ways to mix his plethora of skills to ultimately defeat them, if only just barely.

As the title implies, he finally arrives at the capital and the book ends with him starting his school days phase at the academy but not as a student.

Regrettably, this book suffers from the same shortcomings as in book 1, i.e., long iterative sections where his larded-up stats and skills are repeated, seemingly used as easy filler to achieve a desired word count. Additionally, while Boise Blue' performance is well done, Ally Frey's narration of multiple female voices is marred by slow sentence recitals and other squeaky renditions, making it difficult to understand, at times.

Still, I plan to continue the series.

The smooth progression of the main character and other characters.

I was actively rooting for Ajax. I would be paranoid also if I was in his shoes. About time he uses his previous life's memory to get ahead. With medieval life, simple advancement should be key for him. Gain that system.

Ready for Book 3

Listened to Ajax's Ascension on youtube up to chapter 330 or 360. Good enough story to buy it on here and listen to it again. Once book 3 is released I'll be getting it as well.

great continuation! need next one

having read the books on Patreon, I'm always excited for the audio release. book picks right up from last one, Lexi's voice seems better than first book. if I ha to complain about something, it's you're not sure who is speaking sometimes, maybe announce who is talking, but eventually you figure it out through context after a few sentences. keep them coming, need the next one.

Decent LitRPG

Overall, this is an enjoyable series. I often encounter main characters that are incredibly annoying, or I get bored with whatever gimmick makes the series unique. As of the second installment, my attention hasn't wandered. That being said, I would only rate it as decent.

The author could use a better editor to catch things like shifting perspectives when thinking. For example, in the middle of an internal monologue where the MC is considering a course of action, the author uses "does he" instead of "should I." There are other examples of this throughout the book.

The narrators also have some issues. The female narrator has an odd cadence where her lines are often delivered very slowly, with breaks and pauses in the middle of sentences that don't seem to be associated with grammar.

I give the series a 4-star overall rating because I like the genre, and it's nice to have an MC that I don't hate.
