Very good!!

Bought this on a whim for something to listen to while waiting for another book to come out, and so happy I did! Very well done characters flushed out just the right amount to make them all interesting without getting to bogged down in back story. The magic system is VERY well thought out!! Reminds me of the Dresden files with explaining how and why the magic works instead of a generic fireball or lightning spell. 5 stars!!!

Great book, well narrated. 2nd book isnt.

Great book, well narrated. I'm at the beginning of the second book and it's just not hitting the same. I bought this because it's a series but the second book seems weird.

Enjoyable

I wasn't sure what to think of it in the beginning but I grew engrossed in the story as it moved along. I think the story is very interesting so far with a likable main character so I'm continuing on to book 2 to see what happens next.

Audio worth the wait

I could wait for this audiobook to be available. But I’m glad that I did and didn’t just get the kindle version. The story was humorous and had a good flow with enjoyable characters.

Highly Recommend!!!

Wow! I really enjoyed this book. I can usually figure out how a book will end beforehand, but this one kept me on my toes (in a good way). The author's approach to the magic system made this a fun and interesting read (or in my case listen) from start to finish.

The voice actor for the audiobook did a really good job as well. His pacing felt natural. He voiced the book in a way that brought the characters to life and made the story feel even more immersive.

Pretty Good System Apocalypse Story

I've read many system apocalypse stories, and post-apocalypse books and this is one of the best for a couple reasons:
-The MC is OP but only just. he is only OP by comparison to trash mobs. He isn't the only one that's that OP, and he is also majorly hobbled.
-He makes smarter decisions (than most MCs) without being a sucker or a sociopath.
-He makes good decisions as a team leader when applicable. Most other stories have a team that serves no purpose except flavor text, or entirely seen as pawns to be thrown away, or (worst of all) just a giant harem.

Wary from the negative reviews?

If you’re like me you noticed some rather negative reviews about the ending. You may have also looked into the second book and checked to see if the negatives go away.

I will say this first book is worth the read or listen in this case. The ending was kinda lame I admit and I honestly don’t know if I will pick the second one up as the MC loses access to the system at the very end.

The how’s and why of that lose would be a spoiler so I will leave that off. I will say the ending also showed there might be more going on in the background then I expected so I might try the second one out.

Intelligent writing makes for an amazing series!

The 'system apocalypse' series is often hit or miss with its implementation. Various authors have come up with lore to explain it or not, with varying success. The system in this series isn't explained fully in the first book but it's clear the author has put thought into the how and why of the varied magic in this universe. (It gets even better in the sequels!)

The main character is flawed, with a realistic history and trauma. More importantly, he's a savvy, mature, and intelligent protagonist. He doesn't fall for the usual trope traps and is quite the conniving pragmatist. His powers allow for his intelligence to show through careful planning and adaptation as well.

Some other reviews panned the first book due to the ending. Let me reassure readers that things work out well enough in the sequels, although it's a challenge for Jeb. As frustrated as I was with the ending of book 1, the main character's resolve and determination makes his successes and failures a worthy and wild ride to read through the other books in the series.

This is by far one of the best LitRPG series I've found on Audible, and I can't wait for more to come!
