About this listen

Sometimes, life’s greatest lessons are found in failure…

With the circumvention of Aurora’s grim fate—and a heavy heart at what’d been required to avoid it—Rowan and his budding Party take their first steps toward realizing their goals; Aurora, a brilliant young woman, is determined to uncover the truths behind her father’s disappearance. Nathaniel, the stalwart companion, is shackled by his name and longs to be free. Rowan, a wily old geezer, is compelled by his circumstances to turn their unlikely coalition into a force that can survive the fated calamity.

Rowan once more dons the mantle of mentor as his growing Party looks to him for guidance. Lessons learned through tribulation are everlasting. Within the shadow of danger lurks opportunity. And oftentimes, the biggest threat is the one you don’t see coming...

I think this was a great sequel. I don't imagine many who liked the first won't like this one. The ending leaves you waiting for the ending but I think it was to make us want more.

My bias may be showing.

I have two complaints. One, this one was way shorter than I wanted it to be. And two, now I have to wait forever until the next one comes out.

Spoiler below:

I will say that the relationship with Cas seemed to come out of no where. I don’t mind it I just hope that they build it up better. It kinda felt like “ oh and now they like each other”

Great addition to the story

I enjoyed the books. The card system, and the characters were all well fleshed out. The only character I didn’t enjoy as much was the one who felt a bit like Hermione. The book ends abruptly and there is no book three yet.

A fun ride.

It feels like the story took are hard left turn without any explanation or reason towards the end. The ending sucks and feels like the author got sick of writing and just stopped mid chapter or something similar. Hoping for a more complete book 3 but I'm getting the sense the author doesn't have anything else to say.

Not bad but it lost momentum 2/3 way in

I wish it was longer, it felt like more happened in the first one but it was a great book

just as good as the first

I want to start off by saying that I am a fan of this work so maybe I am a bit biased, that being said I am very picky with the stories I dedicate it time to and cannot stand poor writing or plot.

Positives: continues strongly from the first book and we get right into the action of advancing the floors. There is some sped up time to allow our characters to progress at a pace where the story will be best served, but it is fluid and doesn't feel too rushed. The overall story was well laid out and we get some questions answered somewhat.

Now to the negatives: without spoiling anything I feel like the author needs to make sure that at least in the next book to focus on their character development to make them act in a more natural way as time goes on. Naturally as people spend more time together their relationships tend to evolve as well. From start to finish you don't see much of that in this book, where we start is basically where we end with the relationships except for one that I feel is being forced to developer on a certain direction but that I personally do not feel is in character for that person.

Other than those small qualms and the fact that nothing really happens in this book until the end it was a good book. Hopefully the author isn't going to release anymore short books as a money grab and actually puts a whole story together like in the first book again. Still a good book.

I really enjoy this world that the author has created

The first two of these book are good and well written. My only complaint is book 1 is a setup book (origins) and this book is the start. It seems the author is working on another series also which implies the next book might not be out for another year. It might be worth waiting a year or two while these stories build up for a more complete experience, especially considering the short length compared to other long running series (27 hours every quarter).

Good but might want to wait

This series is one of my favorites I have listened to in the last year. The narration is fantastic. the only small complaint I have is that the book is a bit short. Still I highly recommend it.

a fantastic sequel

I think the goal was to stop on a cliff hanger which never feels satisfying but it really just stops as the story builds depth. One or two more chapters would really have helped set up what we expect next instead of dropping a bomb (that is strongly foreshadowed) and then literally as it explodes the screen goes dark knowing the next part is still the bomb exploding. Truthfully recommended waiting till the next book to start. Also this is only a 7:30 hour book 2 hours of card descriptions you will want to look up and read and skip.

Great story really awkward stopping point

Good second book with good pacing and story telling. And as always amazing narration by Jeff Hays.

Another great book in the series
