Publisher's summary

The desire for dignity is universal and powerful. It is a motivating force behind all human interaction - in families, in communities, in the business world, and in relationships at the international level. When dignity is violated, the response is likely to involve aggression, even violence, hatred, and vengeance. On the other hand, when people treat one another with dignity, they become more connected and are able to create more meaningful relationships.

Surprisingly, most people have little understanding of dignity, observes Donna Hicks in this important book. Drawing on her extensive experience in international conflict resolution and on insights from evolutionary biology, psychology, and neuroscience, the author explains what the elements of dignity are, how to recognize dignity violations, how to respond when we are not treated with dignity, how dignity can restore a broken relationship, why leaders must understand the concept of dignity, and more. Hicks shows that by choosing dignity as a way of life, we open the way to greater peace within ourselves and to a safer and more humane world for all.

Critic reviews

"With its accessible tone, pithy observations and lessons, and Hicks's argument that the 'quest for dignity is as common in the boardroom as in the bedroom', this book is a must-read for all." (Publishers Weekly)

A must listen!

With so much going on in the world right now, one thing we cannot allow is to be treated with indignity. This book truly has given me new found perspective and knowledge. Thank you immensely, Donna Hicks, Ph.D

Mindblowing!

Everyone who has been in a conflict knows that it is painful, but most people do not know why it is so painful. Anyone who has experienced being bullied, harassed or set aside knows that it hurts insanely, but few people know why it hurts and shame. All parents want to raise safe and harmonious children, but not everyone knows how. The theme of the book is dignity - what and how. I do not regret for a second that I have spent time on this book. And I will not only listen to it again, but also read it on paper! I can warmly recommend this book to anyone trying to understand the feeling of shame, insecurity, fear or the feeling of worthlessness, or for that matter, what makes one feel valued.

Un libro humano

El modelo de dignidad presentado en este libro habla de lo más profundo del ser humano. Ejemplificado con casos que nos hace entender la humanidad compartida. Me encantó

Essential reading for humans

Foundational perspective on an important topic for which threads can be pulled across all lived experiences. I tend to prefer brevity in illustrative examples; I mostly found the examples/stories helpful. This book is useful for giving names to prior experience. Applicable to life at all ages…a must read.

Not Scholarly

This book was full of platitudes and overuses terms (that I generally acknowledge and appreciate) to near meaninglessness. The sweeping claims from such a surface level use of research was disappointing and discrediting.
