Publisher's summary

Humanity is dying, hunted to extinction by creatures of legend. One boy was born to save them all.

That boy just got knifed in the back. He looked a bit too much like Aaron, you see.

Now it’s Aaron’s job to step up, lest his death correct that little mix-up. But Aaron’s skills as a street rat run more towards stealing and stabbing than saving. The more he learns of what brought dear dead Markus to that fatal alleyway, the more he has to wonder just what the world’s savior was really up to the night the wrong boy died.

Really glad I checked this book out

With really engaging world building, memorable and well written characters, and an overarching mystery with great payoff at the end, this is a book I’ll be thinking about for awhile. I can’t wait for more from this series. Only complaint I have is that the reader talks really fast, even during parts that would be better slowed down. Other than that he did a great job too.

The characters are well rounded, realistic, funny, and don't make dumb decisions to further the plot

I LOVE how the author writes, especially the main character. Aaron is rational, has self preservation, and listens to the people around him, which is an astonishingly rare set of traits in a protagonist. He's also brave, smart, funny and damaged, the usual excellent traits for a protagonist. ALL the characters are like this. Self aware and intelligent, making the best decisions they can with the information they have. Nobody is a scape goat for stupidity. It's a pet peeve of mine when characters are bullheaded and refuse to see reality. They're certainly not perfect either, making plenty of errors, missing things, and so on. Which I also love. Just, impeccable characterization all around.

To compliment that, Kovacs has this sly, understated way of slipping in world building without resulting to exposition. I love the way I need to read between the lines to grasp the full implication of what's being stated. If there's any downside to this book it's that casual readers might get lost if they're not paying attention. But again, that's a perk for the voracious reader like me.

captivating

absolutely fantastic writing and wonderful performance. Aaron's story pulled me right in and never failed to amuse, sadden, intrigue or interest me in some other way - if I could give 10 stars, I would.

this is absolutely fantastic

I loved this story so much. it kept me engaged without any eye rolling (which can happen with so many pieces moving around). the world building was fantastic and I want to know so much more. when the book ended I was left eager for more. the narration was excellent - Gary Furlong is a favorite, so I'm not at all surprised he nailed it again. I cannot wait for more in this world.

I enjoyed this

Good story, narrator did a good job. I’ll look for the sequel. I got it partially for the cover art and it didn’t disappoint

Fun, imaginative story, with excellent narration.

Rarely do I find a great story improved by listening rather than reading, but the narrator of this work was so charming I did not want to stop until the story was done. I've been delighting in this web novel on RoyalRoad for a while, annoyed only that it is released so slowly. It felt as if I could not get enough. The complexities of the fantasy world were also trickier to follow at that slow pace. Enjoying it all at once, with a narrator capable of so brilliantly expressing the quirky humor of the main character, enhanced my enjoyment dramatically. I can hardly wait for the next book/audiobook in this series the be released!

A few rough spots but…

The story line has a few rough spots but the clever dialogue keeps it moving along. Hopefully there is more coming.
