Publisher's summary

One faithful day, Henry Tsien finds a briefcase and a ring within it. Within hours, his world has changed, as a helpful jinn introduces him to a hidden world. What can an old-school gamer given magic do in a world filled with age-old, hidden, supernatural creatures?

The Hidden Wishes series is an urban fantasy take on the gamlit genre. It is much lighter in terms of "statistics" and its game system. This is the full trilogy of the series.

Books include:

  • A Gamer’s Wish
  • A Squire’s Wish
  • A Jinn’s Wish

Enjoy the entire Hidden Wishes series in just one book!

Great story, great performance!

A super interesting take on the gamelit genre with well developed characters that are easy to care about. Mix a novel approach to magic theory, a beautiful, all powerful jinn, an amazon warrior goddess, and a naive but well intentioned gamer geek and add in a heaping helping of interesting other worldly supporting characters for a fast-paced, story that I couldn't put down.

The story

Brought the possibility of this story becoming reality. I really enjoyed these characters. The possibility of real manic a little closer to possibility.

Not his best work but OK

The narration is at times a bit flat and hurried and becomes monotone. I had to rewind a number of times as I zoned out. Other than that OK.

The characters are also a bit flat and I never felt like I knew them, and that detracted from the book. Also it is a bit hurried as a story although the premises are good and I liked the overall idea.

As a compilation it’s worth the credit, but I’ve listened to better works by the author.

Unique Take on LitRPG

This series presents a interesting version of LitRPG. The protagonist finds a Genie's ring and wishes to gain magic. In order for this to work (and stay within the allowed power of a wish), the genie sets up a system wherein the protagonist gets a game interface while progressing in the real world.

The stakes start low, but rise very substantially by the end of the series, and the action involved in that is handled well.

There are sections that are a bit of a slog (for good story reasons), but the rest, specifically including the climax are quite good.

If you're looking for something LitRPG-adjacent, but with a twist, this series is recommended.

Finally a book that has good writing

I loved these books. I like smart bad guys. I like smart good guys. And I like the clever way this story went. If you are a gamer you will appreciate this series. Fun stuff.

Take the Chance!

I was really unsure about this series before buying it, although the sample sounded interesting. I am so glad I took the chance to listen!! The story is good at reeling you in, and the characters are modern and fresh!

His other series was better

I couldn’t tell you how many times I lost details due to getting disinterested in the story, which there wasn’t much of. The main character is basically a naive child who blindly trusts people, and doesn’t come up with smart solutions. Majority of the book is his daily life of leveling. I would have preferred he just been one of the bros instead of what we got. The other main female lead basically friend zones him throughout the book until the last part of the book, and even then it’s like what is their relationship exactly?

All 3 are really good

Tao Wong is quickly becoming a favorite author. The narrator could be a little more energetic. It was a little more monotone than I normally like.
