About this listen

The greatest athletic performances spring from the mind, not the body. Elite athletes have known this for decades, and now science is learning why it's true. In his fascinating new book, How Bad Do You Want It?, coach Matt Fitzgerald examines more than a dozen pivotal races to discover the surprising ways elite athletes strengthen their mental toughness.

Fitzgerald puts you into the pulse-pounding action of more than a dozen epic races from running, cycling, triathlon, XTERRA, and rowing with thrilling race reports and revealing postrace interviews with the elites. Their own words reinforce what the research has found: Strong mental fitness lets us approach our true physical limits, giving us an edge over physically stronger competitors. Each chapter explores the how and why of an elite athlete's transformative moment, revealing powerful new psychobiological principles you can practice to flex your own mental fitness.

The new psychobiological model of endurance performance shows that the most important question in endurance sports is: How bad do you want it? Fitzgerald's fascinating book will forever change how you answer this question and show you how to master the psychology of mind over muscle. These lessons will help you push back your limits and uncover your full potential.

Great real life example book

The authors starts off by saying this is not a how to book. It will not give you some checklist to run down to gauge how bad do you want it. It is a book with real world examples of individuals who were confronted with the question of how bad do they want it. It goes on to provide their response to that question. It is their responses that you can pull from as you run your own races (this book is really for endurance athletes) to help push you over the edge.

Effective and motivating

This book is the right mix of science and storytelling. The real life examples of the successes and failures of world class athletes makes you think about the ‘why‘ of participating in endurance sports. In the end I found myself asking and answering the question ‘how bad do I want it?’ This book put me on a path of self reflection. I’m afraid I may have to give up on some of the excuses I used to tell myself when I wanted to throw the towel in!

The narration, which many complained about, was not an issue. If you’re fine with the sample reading then the rest of the book won’t bother you. Not sure what gentle lullaby some folks were expecting but Matt sounds like every coach I’ve heard!

Good book. Narrator a little bit single tone.

I enjoyed he stories and analysis of the information provided. But the narrator didn't have enough life. Most other people who listened to it with me in the car fell asleep. Still I would recommend it.

A must read for athletes of all types and AGES!

The edge you need is between your ears. I have had good races and bad...the difference had to be between my ears because my fitness and skills were the same. This book brought this to my attention in a way that I think will allow me to harness my mind more effectively. Time will tell, but I am never going to see racing the same again.
