About this listen

Sports Nutritionist Matt Fitzgerald has spent nearly twenty years studying the diets of top professional endurance athletes, who are among the fittest and healthiest people in the world. As a result, he has identified five core habits—most of which are contrary to what popular diets advise—that are essential to maximizing workout benefits. The Endurance Diet shares key strategies for optimal health and performance: eat everything, eat quality, eat carbohydrate, eat enough, and eat individually. Whether you want to lose weight, win a race, or look a little more like an elite athlete, this plan is for you.

“I am always amazed at how much I learn from Matt Fitzgerald’s books.” –Shalane Flanagan, Olympic bronze medalist

The Racing Weight and New Rules of Marathon and Half Marathon Nutrition author’s first diet book: advice on everything from how (and how much) to eat, sample food plans from elite endurance athletes, delicious recipes, and science-based research. He is a coach and spokesperson for PEAR Sports and former senior editor at Triathlete and Competitor. The Endurance Diet by Matt Fitzgerald

The Endurance Diet by Matt Fitzgerald is an absolute game-changer for anyone serious about endurance sports or simply looking to fuel their body for high performance and long-term health. Fitzgerald brings together compelling research, real-world athlete interviews, and his signature no-nonsense writing style to create a nutrition blueprint that’s both practical and sustainable.

What sets this book apart is its flexibility and inclusivity. Rather than advocating for a rigid or extreme eating style, Fitzgerald outlines five core habits observed in elite endurance athletes across the globe—habits that are refreshingly realistic and achievable. The emphasis on diversity, quality, and balance makes the diet feel like a lifestyle, not a restriction.

Fitzgerald’s approach demystifies performance nutrition. He reinforces the idea that food is fuel, and that eating a wide variety of whole, minimally processed foods—including carbs!—is essential for endurance success. His writing is backed by science but never feels dry, and the personal anecdotes add a human, relatable touch.

Whether you’re a marathoner, triathlete, cyclist, or just passionate about optimizing your performance and recovery, The Endurance Diet provides the knowledge and structure to help you reach your goals without obsession or burnout. It’s one of the most empowering and sensible sports nutrition books available—and a must-read for athletes at any level.

important material missing

The book itself was great. It was full of very good information, and kept promising more. It kept mentioning tables of information, diagrams of different things, and recipes. Except the audio book doesn't have any of those things. The tables are skipped over. The diagrams go undescribed. The recipes are taken out entirely. Skip, and get the text version. It has the important stuff included I assume.

A lot of details

Great details but books like these are better read in print form because taking notes and putting into practice is a lot easier

Would need to be fact checked by experts

Usually enjoying the writer’s work but this one doesn’t deliver new material and is sometime directly conflicting with the work of well respected experts in the field such as Dc and pro coach Phil Maffetone and many others. I wouldn’t recommend this one but other less “scientific” books from the authors are great.

Cherry picking info

Choosing to pick only studies and stories that support his ideas. Refusing to acknowledge anything that goes against his own opinions
