About this listen

December 1874

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are looking forward to a traditional Christmas with plenty of food, alcohol, and the odd duel. But then Death meets Elizabeth, a young girl with unusual gifts, who needs their protection.

When other children start going missing throughout London and the Prime Minister himself asks for their help, they have to put down the brandy and mince pies to solve the mystery while—as usual—saving the world from an unspeakable horror.

Can’t wait for more!

I love everything about this series. The characters are quirky, brave, and fun, the dialogue is smart and engaging, the story is captivating and the narrator captures the tone and feeling of every character. There is just enough action to keep one in suspense without the endless battles some books engage in. Love these books and I can’t wait for the next installment. I wouldn’t hate it if this was turned into a television series…as long as it stays true to the characters and some nitwit doesn’t ruin it.

Character development

The first three books in this series told one story, and I would characterize that story as a fun romp inspired by several 1980’s pop culture classics.

This box set contains three books, and each book is a separate story that gives more depth to the characters introduced in the first series. The humor is still there, but it feels like the overall story gains some maturity, for lack of a better term.

I fell in love with these books several years ago and was thrilled but anxious when an audio version was released. Poor narration can ruin even the best books. Dan Calley did a wonderful job. I feel like his narration added texture and extra humor (humour for our UK friends) to the stories, since I at least rarely conjure accents for characters when I read stories in print. Dan not only gave each character its own voice, but I believe (ignorant American, here) he even used distinct regional dialects. I thoroughly enjoyed this iteration of Dave Turner’s books.

Hope Dave Turner will give us Books 6-8 someday

Loved every moment of every single story in each of the six books. Truly a bargain to get three for one. While some of the books may be short, this is one series where I would spend a credit and not complain about the length.

Death has a near-life experience and all the bodily functions along with it

Liked a little back story got threaded back into the continuing story and Dave's circle is starting to expand a little bit
