Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

As high achievers, we’ve been conditioned to believe that the path to success is paved with relentless work. That if we want to overachieve, we have to overexert, overthink, and overdo. That if we aren’t perpetually exhausted, we’re not doing enough. But lately, working hard is more exhausting than ever. And the more depleted we get, the more effort it takes to make progress. Stuck in an endless loop of “Zoom, eat, sleep, repeat”, we’re often working twice as hard to achieve half as much.

Take stock of your life: Based on your last 30 days of work (or marriage, or parenting), would your company rehire you? Would your partner immediately recommit to you? Would your children want you to continue to be their parent? The easy answer is, "Absolutely!" But it's probably not the honest answer. Your life might read like a success story, and your parents and friends might even think you have it all figured out, but you have a secret: You feel out of place in your own life. You'd rather binge-watch Netflix than think about what's next. You're living on autopilot.

Story
In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala, the science director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, explains that our inability to achieve sustainable fulfillment is tied to common but outdated notions about success. We are taught that getting ahead means doing everything that's thrown at us (and then some) with razor-sharp focus and iron discipline; that success depends on our drive and talents.

Story
Common sense tells us that to lose weight, we must eat less and exercise more. But somehow we get stalled. We start on a weight-loss program with good intentions but cannot stay on track. Neither the countless fad diets, nor the annual spending of $50 billion on weight loss helps us feel better or lose weight. Too many of us are in a cycle of shame and guilt. We spend countless hours worrying about what we ate or if we exercised enough, blaming ourselves for actions that we can't undo.

Very Insightful
I have always felt different and odd as a corporate employee that went from Home/Mom/Housewife in my early Thirty's to being an employee in a corporate setting. I never really fit in and the way that I worked was never seen by the other woman I worked with that were all career and no family. I did things differently, I connected and my empathy level for others was off the chart compared to others that were striving for a promotion then just getting the job assigned done. As I have grown from my Thirty's to now in my late 50s I have been in numerous corporation positions in various industries and the results are the same. I am a reformed housewife working in the IT world who can not seem to understand why I work so differently then others and yet have a track record that is admired and solid. I get results, finish projects on time on budget - know my industry - understand my role and those I manage but still feel odd and awkward and challenged internally daily.
That was until I saw this book on an email string sent to me about over thinking. I am not much of a reader of these types of self help books. I lack the concentration or stick-to-it-ness to dedicate myself to engage and finish. So, I usually pass. I might go so far as read the title, possibly a chapter and move on. I decided that for this book I would buy the audible and see if maybe that would help motivate and move me from chapter 1 to understanding, accepting and action.
I must tell you, the fact this author nailed my personality and what I was facing on a daily basis so accurately just made me stop and pause. It gave me hope because I am not alone. There are others out there with my work ethics and abilities - I have a community, identity and a way to define and hone.
I have not only taken part in listening to this book and understanding as she puts it - what it looks like --- that it has moved the needle with me on acceptance and how to stop beating myself up for how I am - just because I am so different than most of my contemporaries, but I have also recommended it to many of my friends that commented how alike we think but never could put a finger on what that was.
If you are struggling on how you fit into the corporate world because of your empathy, over thinking and big picture super powers - I highly suggest you listen to this book - it may change your perspective and give you insights on how to accept and work through your self doubt.

A Terrific Resource You'll Use Again and Again
Melody has constructed an accessible framework for harnessing difficult, often paralyzing, emotions and behaviors. Simply being aware of the bigger picture around how one's feelings operate and manifest in various environments is empowering; this book provides that picture. Building on that understanding, the reader is given tools to capitalize on emotions as strengths for success in their work and personal lives. Melody's concepts and tools deliver reliable guidance that does not go stale and can serve you over and over again as you navigate new challenges. Highly recommend.

A Powerful Book for Uniquely Powerful People
This book hits the sweet spot for driven, success-oriented individuals who experience elevated self doubt, imposter sydrome, analysis paralysis, and self criticism. What the author describes as "sensitive strivers" is a group that's kind of hard to peg, yet she nails it in a way only someone who has been there herself can. I have always been a sensitive person driven to push myself in life and at work. It's difficult to talk about sensitivity without making it seem either immature or like a personality defect. Others talk about sensitivity in a woo woo self-help kind of way. This book strikes a realistic tone with tons of practical examples grounded in science and actual people's experiences. It looks at sensitivity not as a defect or a mystical superpower, but as a real part of yourself. A tool you can put to work for you or allow to work against you. The book provides a clear framework to understand how Sensitive Strivers tick, examples of real people who put their sensitivity to work for them and lots of exercises to help you achieve the same results in your life. The concepts are approachable, the stories are so very relatable, and the results are powerful.

Having spent 21 yrs in the corporate world I am ready to venture out on my own. I was hoping this book would be an entrepreneurial mindset
guide as well. All in all though a very useful resource for a young person navigating a corporate ladder.
