Publisher's summary

Many people compare depression to an abyss - a never-ending downward spiral of hopelessness. In this heavy, but empowering, follow-up to the best-selling Get Out of Your Head: A Toolkit for Living with and Overcoming Anxiety, author Brian Sachetta takes that comparison literally, bringing listeners on an aquatic adventure, through one of life's most difficult challenges.

On that journey, Sachetta explores the biological, psychological, and social forces behind the affliction, to help listeners understand how it often manifests in their lives. And, most importantly, he provides a beacon of hope to those stranded at sea, or caught in the whirlpool of despair.

It's one mental health voyage you won't want to miss.

Amazing audiobook!

This is an amazing book that uses skillful analogies and personal experience to tackle a difficult but widespread subject. Despite the fact that I am a doctor who has researched depression extensively, I found useful thoughts and insights on the human condition.

Time to start living

I was gifted this audio book recently and it is phenomenal. For someone who has battled depression in the past, I can attest that it's just one big swirling mess that makes you feel you are going to be stuck there forever. If anything, you are convinced that it's only going to get worse, never better. The author hits the nail on the head - it truly is an abyss. The advice contained in this book will bring hope and practical steps on getting out of a depressive state. Life is too short to be stuck like this. I highly recommend this to anyone who thinks that they are dealing with depression.

Such an incredible book!

Depression is a complex and multifaceted issue that can have many different causes. This book provides an excellent overview of the topic, from discussing what depression actually means to providing practical tips for dealing with it. I love how this book discusses mental health in such a hopeful way - as something we should learn about and work towards overcoming together rather than be ashamed or scared by. The entire at sea concept was brilliant, because there are so many analogies you could use when talking about depression - which makes it much easier to understand the idea behind the emotion even if you’re not experiencing it yourself. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this heartfelt and informative piece of literary art as a resource to help those who want to overcome the great abyss.

Finding A Way Out!

There are many metaphors in this rather well-produced audiobook, and I think it helps in the navigation process as the subject is one dear to my heart. One of my family members suffers from depression and I have seen firsthand how it can affect both her and the family unit. This book is as said, a ship in a storm, this will clarify, soothe and hopefully help to reduce depression, in a word, it is the "pathway" out. Great book.

So relatable

I found this book to be so relatable. As a person with depression and growing up with people in my life with depression I found this book and the stories from the author genuine. I have read and listened to so many different books but this one resonated with me differently. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with depression or even to gift it to someone who is struggling.

Informative and Well-Written

This audiobook is extremely powerful and has well-written stories. My favorite part is that the author keeps you intrigued by using the metaphor of ships and sailing. I felt uplifted and hopeful by the end. The strategies offered were science-baked and practical for almost anyone—overall, a joy to listen to.

A book to help you find your way!

A refreshing and courageous take on depression. Unlike many other books on the subject, the author takes us along on a voyage by sharing his personal struggles with depression and how he dealt with them. The book is also well researched and distills the science behind depression to help you take a step back and understand the meta-perspective of the problem.

This book is for everyone who feels alone and lost in their battle against depression. You will find your way!

Well thought out

Overall I really enjoyed this listen. My father struggles with depression and I am always looking to educate myself better and learn as much as I can in order to help him thrive. I also enjoyed that the chapter titles carried the boating theme throughout. I thought it was cleverly written for that.
