Publisher's summary

Demonic alien-killing, blood-splattering LitRPG/LitFPS action in a dark science-fiction world.

[Overtaken Online. The world's first FPS VR-MMORPG with 100 percent immersion. Reminiscent of classics like Doom and Dead Space, but with RPG-elements that enable players to level up and develop skills—and sprinkled with a pinch of magic. ]

Thirty-three-year-old game designer Dex Walsh spends an entire year devoured by sorrow after the death of his wife. As a last-ditch effort to regain his joy, he sells everything and joins Overtaken Online.

Expecting to spawn in a noob-friendly area with guidance from his personal assistant, he instead finds himself naked and alone in a dark prison cell rapidly filling with gas.

Under-leveled and not knowing how to escape, he has no idea how far he will be able to progress as long as he pushes forward and doesn't give up.

Beware! This story contains:

  • Blood and guts
  • Foul language
  • Notifications/pop-ups/inventory management
  • No harem

First thee pretty good, 4th was a slog

the first three books were pretty good, the last one had some pacing issues and felt like they were trying to fit a 5th book inside of it.

The main character is the only actual player in the game, everyone else is an NPC waiting for the MC to move the story forward or save them. Until the 4th book he has only met maybe 5 players, but in the 4th book they are all helping to fight the big bad, only they are no better than the NPCs and need the main character to move the story forward and save them.

The main character also overshadows his Team, they exist for a love interest and so that he is not talking to himself the entire time.

just great

I loved it. Being new to the lit rpg genre, it filled me with everything that I love about gaming and the future hopes for it. I found the MC a bit asshole-ish at times, bit realized that if I were in the same spot and scenario,I too would be the same. It is after all... a game. I loved it and hope there will be more added to this series. I would love to see the continuation of Dexter Jonathan Walsh and his Cadre of peeps continue to smash face. Thank you for the amazing listen. It makes my mail route just a bit tolerable.

Great Onibus and I hope there is more

I enjoyed the overall story the MC progresses in spurts and he does not become some overpowered MC that just rolls through everything

There was some good romance with out going over the top.

The only complaint I have at the moment is the fact that the story is left hanging i am looking forward to the author continuing this series

Good story but whiny character

The story is a good one, but i don't like that the main character is extremely whiny and a bit stupid.

Good although

I enjoyed it, however it wasn't a book that got me hooked on listening to. I didn't have that feeling of needing to know what happened next .

I loved the story. Spoilers ahead.

The narrator did a wonderful job, in my opinion. I've listened to hundreds of stories over the years and have no complaints with his style. I kept thinking about how he could use his teleportation skills to cut people's body parts off. What if he tricked someone to go into a portal and then close it when they got partway through? One part of his body is in one location, while the other stays in the original location. Could be a nice use of his Cybermage abilities as well as so much more, haha. I think the struggle with the loss of his wife and being able to slowly overcome his grief, allowing him to move on, was a good pace throughout the story. I recommend this book to all LitRPG readers.

My review

The story and writing are good. I do wish they had a second actor the female voices. It got a little cringe there for a few of them. Over all I thought I was a good listening while driving home from work.

A nice change!

I have listened to numerous LitRPG's and this was a nice change from the "player gets transported and can't return" stories all the others are.

The character growth and experience was very well written and made me think it would be a thoroughly enjoyable experience if or when they ever get technology to this stage.

Real life wv prepper noticed mistakes.

First big mistake that I noticed was that the author figured that pace makers malfunctions would automatically make their users die. He mentioned the immediate death of people due to inop pacemakers. Pacemaker malfunction doesn’t kill you it. Second thing was that they didn’t take the horses of the inmates dressed as police…. Anyway the list continued with incorrect assumptive statements….. antibiotics don’t go bad by their date. They fall off in Potency pills more stable than liquid etc. It just got irritating and when they decided to go to South America when they were

People if you want prepping advice you can get
Some hints from this book but don’t use it as a full guide.

And PLEASE tell me that fourth year old men have more self control than this guy does.

This book will keep you awake on a drive but really… the record Davies County snowfall is 17” over 3 days. Not four feet. I think that he just made up stuff from book to book and forgot his

aggregating

here's the thing the mc is just human garbage. He believes the world revolves around him and can do no wrong. Whenever someone in the group has an actual good idea he looks down on them like they're children trying to help an adult with a puzzle. Not only do the MC not trust the team he expects them too have complete faith in him while he treats them like servants. Honestly this series would have been much better if the MC did a solo play.
