About this listen

Let the rivalries begin.

If Jackson Hunt ever wants to become a champion monster trainer, he’s got a long road ahead of him. And he’s not the only one with dreams of glory.

As a new season of the Djinn Battle League fast approaches, Jackson prepares to enter training camp - a grueling series of tests to discover talented new tamers. The rules are simple: If you’re not the best, you go home.

For a young man who lives to battle, going home isn’t an option. There’s only one problem - Jackson isn’t so sure he deserves to be there in the first place. With competition heating up, Jackson’s bond with his Djinn will be tested to their limits. But no matter how much he trains, if his new monsters won’t work together, he won’t stand a chance.

The fighting will be intense. The rivalries, fierce. At the end of the road, the chance of a lifetime awaits. Against friends and foes both old and new, can Jackson prove he’s worthy of a shot at the big leagues?

Djinn Tamer: Rivals is the second book in the Djinn Tamer series, a monster-battling LitRPG for fans of Pokemon, Digimon, and Monster Rancher.

Like Pokemon but Better

I thought this book was a good easy listen as an audio book. I finished it within 3 days of starting it. I will definitely check out the others in the series.

Classic story line with a gamer twist

Yep, this is the Rocky formula... Main character goign in, succeeding, failing, and kicking butt in the end. That said, it was an enjoyable story in the way it used the world fo LitRPG. I've read a few LitRPG books now even that they are not my go-to fodder for sitting back with a book. I'm not a gamer so I absolutely skim over parts of the books that deal with player stats on anything. I just don't follow them past the very basics. Luckily for me, I can still enjoy them without the need to geek out and get into those stats.

It's a fun story, and even that it is the second book in the series, it's not important to read the first as this one stands just fine all on its own. If you are looking for a light read that has fun characters and a pleasant, if predictable, storyline then this is goign to be a nice listen. It was not a waste of a credit.

Fantastic!!!!

Narrator: great differentiation between characters, solid pacing
Language: PG/PG13 no fbombs
Violence: typical monster battle stuff
Sexual content: none
Story: very entertaining, definitely looking forward to the third installment. I love the fast paced action and the narrator does this book justice.

Give me more Djinn Battles!

Ok this book was fun. I loved the first one and this one was even better. Jackson has grown up a bit so he is not as whiny as he was in the first one, but he still has that underdog mentality that really keeps him going. I feel like this book really nails the djinn battles and they are so much fun to listen to. I wish there were more of them! As in the first book Oliver Wyman delivers a masterful performance. If you were/are a fan of monster battle shows/games like Pokémon check this series out. Also Jackson is basically Ash Ketchum and Ash is cool so read this book.

Even better than the first

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

TLDR; if you liked the first one you'll enjoy this. You need to listen to the first one before trying this.

This is a fairly simple book to recommend. If you like the idea of catching monsters and battling them then this is a great book. Narration is solid, and the characters are a lot of fun to follow. It does have the standard "young kid does stupid things" from time to time, but given that the characters are young kids... that works, and it's not done in a bad way.

Overall, if you like the sub-genre or LitRPG, in general, you'll enjoy this.

A typical monster tamer story

I have not read the first book, but you can easily jump into this story with this book. The author/s do a great job recapping multiple times what happened in the first book.

As in my title I would say this story follows the typical underdog tale of a monster tamer story. The main character Jackson has to overcome challenges with his djinn and self doubt throughout the book. The story ends quite predictably, but it’s a good journey.

The audible narrator did a great job with the voices. They all felt like I was listening to an anime more than an audiobook, which I enjoyed.

Overall a great book. Excited to see what the next one holds.

I've been waiting!

I've literally been waiting for this book since I heard "Audible hopes you have enjoyed this program" on book one. It doesn't disappoint in the least. There's something about the beauty of nostalgia that just keeps tugging at my heart. It's not a Pokemon ripoff... not at all. Not any more than The Voice is an American Idol ripoff. Its just the same concept done differently, and I love what the author has done with this. I care about Jackson's experience and I want to see him go on to be the best. I'm rooting for you, Jackson!!!!

Book two was great... now where's book three?

Solid work

Lots of good things. Only “criticisms” I would mention would be it would be that not a lot of unique events happen in the story and the plot is pretty basic. It’s still very enjoyable though, even if it’s simplicity.

Underdog story for those how love poket monsters

I really enjoy this series. The MC is a hardworking underdog who is constantly striving to be better, when he can get out of his own way. This book builds on the solid foundation of book one and I cant wait for book 2.
