About this listen

A civilization-ending comet is headed for Earth. Two days before impact, thousands of mysterious pods land in a swath across North America. When people touch them, the pods open. Anyone who climbs inside is carried away. No one knows where the pods came from and no one knows where they go, but finding one is David Williams’ only chance to save his family from the end of the world … and escaping Earth is just the beginning.

THE PRESERVATION OF SPECIES trilogy begins with RULE OF EXTINCTION, a post-apocalyptic science-fiction adventure filled with unforgettable heroes, terrifying monsters, and heart-pounding action.

Let's be real for a sec...

Geoffrey, Geoffrey, Geoffrey! So, you went ahead and made a great book that doesn't have its sequels out yet. Bad move, buccaroo!

Nah, this is a great listen! I have a couple hundred listens under my belt and this one is one that I have to hear the sequels! Think of how life would be when a life-ending comet is discovered, heading directly for Earth. This is pretty much how it would play out. When pods start whistling down from the heavens and people discover they take them away from becoming cosmic pancakes, people will not be getting into organized lines.

What happens when those pods open is where this steak dinner gets juicy! Whether you like your meat product ultra-rare or well-done, this has a place on the menu for you. Oh and don't get too attached to characters. It's no "Red Wedding", but, some characters don't make it to the next chapter.

I really enjoyed thinking I am onto something and then the characters start bringing up exactly what I'm thinking. It has a lot of common sense turns and actions. Some parts are frustrating enough to get you irritated. Just remember that their actions are actually what would likely happen. As it turns out, not every child is Newt, facing off with a queen Xenomorph.

So, I see the other two books are on Kindle, but, I'll wait to add them to my Audible library. Thank you for the great read!

You're not in Kansas anymore, and civility is gone

With a premise that is off-the-beaten-path and full of questions, Rule of Extinction takes the listener on a journey far from Earth yet still familiar in eerie and terrifying ways. The characters are engaging and differentiated; their actions and perceptions making up for nuance and depth. The story plays out like a PvPvE (player vs player vs environment) video game complete with fanciful discoveries, struggles for power, and the ramifications of learning the devastating truth. Stacy Carolan delivered an admirable performance of a wide range of character voices and narrated descriptions. The gritty and dark themes of this book intermixed with realistic observations about people's approaches toward survival will appeal to a wide range of readers across sci-fi cultures. [Disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 1.9x.]

When is the TV series coming? :)

This was so much fun to listen to! I love “end of the world” stories and this one I couldn’t put down. The narrator did an amazing job, lending the perfect tone to it. The story was at the same time something I sort of expected (just given the genre), but the twists to it were totally fresh and unexpected. I saw the time running out and the plot not closing up, and I went from “oh no!”, realizing there wasn’t enough time to get to the end of it, to “hell yes!”, realizing that another book is to come. It’s a five-star for me. Very entertaining! Definitely would love to see that in the screen!

Exceptional

After reading the author’s book The Dinosaur Four, I started following the author’s published updates about this book and the planned series and have kept up with it for the last few years.

Geoff Jones has crafted a genuinely engrossing story with Rule of Extinction. The characters are well developed and you feel invested. The story is appropriately paced, well edited, and the narration is great. It was exceptional.

I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

A fun, original sci fi adventure

This was a really fun read. Lots of great characters. The premise feels fresh and original. The action scenes are edge-of-your-seat -- especially in the finale. It's hard to discuss much without spoilers, and this should definitely be read spoiler-free, so avoid learning too much and just go check it out!
