Publisher's summary

Adam Harris’s name has just appeared on a top secret list of extraterrestrial origin. Unbeknownst to him, he’s one of a handful of individuals capable of implementing a Save Point, a static moment in time he’s able to revisit over and over upon death.

It’s a good thing, too. Brain cancer was turning into a real drag....

The government owns the list though, and they’ve wasted no time snapping him up. According to them, he has 13 days in an alien realm to learn as much as he can before the inevitable, at which point his memories, skill progressions, and weapon proficiencies will endure despite his body resetting.

Then it’s rinse and repeat.

But there are unwritten rules to the game he’s about to play, and unseen forces acting in judgment.

Adam will have to learn the hard way that dying is the easiest thing he’s going to do today.

Worldbuilding, growth, and great performance!

I could tell from the start that I was interested in this book, and that it was well-written. Unfortunately, it also opened up pretty immediately with the main character being a) unlikable and b) a horrendously cringe-inducing neckbeard. THANKFULLY, a) he does appear to develop in some positive directions in the latter half of the book and b) the portrayal of and interactions with a certain female character which made me grimace repeatedly took place all early on. I've gone through a few other books with one or the other issue, and make it a practice to give them a chance to improve- luckily in this case that happened.
By and large, I enjoyed the characters, the banter, and most of all the worldbuilding and the powers. I want more, and look forward to seeing how the final twist (it's a good one, and not just an abrupt gut-punch) plays out in future novels. I also finished the book hopeful that the main character won't stay a person who I instinctively dislike every time he opens his yap.

Will Watt does a strong job as lead narrator, and the rest of the cast does great jobs as well. My only complaint was that there are some sound effects thrown in, and they felt a bit haphazard. I only recall hearing one or two that I thought added to the narration, while the majority pulled me out of it because they necessitated a pause in the narration or just were so abrupt. They weren't pervasive, so I didn't consider it a major flaw, but by the same token...I think I'd have actually enjoyed the book more without any.

Excellent Sci-Fi LitRPG Adventure

This was quite the enjoyable book. It gave me a Starship Troopers vibe with its grotesque scenes and the type of alien enemies they come across. It always felt like the humans were the underdogs which made the fight scenes more tense and uncertain, which got me hooked. I'm excited to see where they take book 2 in the series!

The performance was amazing. All three narrators did an excellent job of executing their dialogue scenes and the sound effects were well produced and placed. This style of recording, with the addition of sound effects, seems to fit this genre particularly well. I’ll have to look into more soundbooth recordings now.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Interesting

The mechanics of this novel are pretty unique. Narration was awesome. Only thing about this book was the main character felt a bit overconfident at times which leads to some gringe moments. He does have some growth as a character but it can a bit fast.
Good book overall and it will be interesting to see where it goes

Death match for the universe

Aliens press gang humanity into a 130 year king of the hill contest without letting us know that the clock started decades ago. It's up to one cancer patient to save all of humanity from slavery if he can manage to get out of bed. Video game action through out. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A Distressing Title

Matthew Siege is a good author. His debut novel, Headshot, was brilliant. The best LitRPG story I've ever read and and one of exactly two LitRPG series I can say is genuinely good instead of a guilty pleasure or entertaining in a dumb way.

The Save Point series disturbs me because is dumb. Really dumb, even given the genre. Entertaining, but dumb. You might think that the author decided to adopt the maxim that stupid sells, but he's so enthusiastic about it that I don't think that's true. Which implies that not only is he capable of writing incredibly good and incredibly stupid stories but that he may not be able to tell the difference.

Obviously, I recommend it.
