Publisher's summary
Ditch the labels and embrace positive, healthy practices for eating, exercising, and living an authentic life - your way!
You don’t have to overhaul your whole life to be healthier and happier - every small change can make a big difference.
Deciding to improve your health, your consciousness, and the world can seem so overwhelming that you don’t know where to begin. When you head down one path, you might face criticism for “not doing it right” or “not following the rules”.
Sometimes, all you need to do is make a few small changes to chart your course to a healthier life that’s authentically you.
Author and actor Alicia Witt isn’t here to dole out lists of dos and don’ts, but she is here to show how adopting the “small changes philosophy” allows you to find balance, eat healthier, and feel better physically and emotionally. She also invites you into her adventurous life, both on and off the set, in stories infused with candor and humor.
In Small Changes, Alicia helps you learn how to:
- Incorporate more plant-based foods into your daily meals (38 easy recipes included!)
- Make lifestyle changes to better care for your body, community, and environment
- Care for your mind, spirit, and soul
- Engage in a short, simple exercise routine to keep yourself strong and fit
Regardless of what you want to improve, Small Changes will help you find your way and teach you how small changes can usher in larger changes - and transform your life.

Welcome to the summer of 1985 in Philadelphia, when the city was rocked—in almost every sense of the word—by two unprecedented events: Mayor W. Wilson Goode’s May 13 decision to bomb the headquarters of MOVE, a controversial Philadelphia-based radical communal organization, and the July 13 Live Aid concert, where international rock royalty convened in Philly to raise money for victims of the Ethiopian famine. Separated by just two months and eight miles, these events would showcase both the best and the worst of the so-called City of Brotherly Love.

By 1930, no place in the world was less well explored than Greenland. The native Inuit had occupied the relatively accessible west coast for centuries. The east coast, however, was another story. In August 1930, Henry George Watkins (nicknamed “Gino”), a twenty-three-year-old British explorer, led thirteen scientists and explorers on an ambitious expedition to the east coast of Greenland and into its vast and forbidding interior to set up a permanent meteorological base on the icecap, 8,200 feet above sea level.

Story
Food. There's plenty of it around, and we all love to eat it. So why should anyone need to defend it? Because in the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion—most of what we’re consuming today is longer the product of nature but of food science. The result is what Michael Pollan calls the American Paradox: The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we see to become.

Critic reviews
"Witt debuts with a showstopping guide to making healthy changes to one's life. Eschewing crash diets, Witt suggests one can improve one's life with a simple routine of exercise (she favors yoga), journaling, and meditation, and eating a plant-heavy diet. Though she is mostly vegan (aside from the occasional piece of salmon or egg), Witt doesn't proclaim it as the only way to eat. Instead, she encourages readers to incorporate more plant-based foods into their meals... Her peppy and empowering writing reads like a good friend giving advice, and her suggestions are practical and easy to implement. Readers thinking of making some positive changes should take a look." —Publisher's Weekly

What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

Easy Listen
Much of Alicia Witt's approach to healthy eating and living is basic and obvious (like eating whole foods, reducing consumption of meat, meditating, and exercising). But it's an easy listen and Alicia has a soothing voice. It's like listening to episodes of a podcast.

Onions
In her suggestions for eating out at restaurants she mentions how she avoids peppers and onions because they offer a little nutritional value? That is absolutely absurd onions and garlic have incredible anti-inflammatory properties and have tons of anti inflammatory benefits. She repeatedly suggest eating the same things, avocado beans, and all kinds of forms hummus falafel beans are all means I doubt she’s actually getting a well-balanced diet. Not too once again, mention the ridiculousness of taking friends meet leftovers from restaurants for her dog! The hypocrisy of letting her dog eat meat but not her is just absurd. Even though she says she’s not coming from a place of judging other peoples eating habits, her diet is so which is meant to be taken as a healthy decision is so restrictive and relies on so many of the same ingredients eaten repeatedly in different forms is plant based burgers fake cheese etc. I think it would be much better off looking at the countries that have high longevity like Sardinia Italy Greece Spain etc. and follow the example.. they do eat meat smaller portions, usually lamb and fish and they do eat a lot of greens and olive oil and garlic and red wine, etc.

Misleading title
This book read more like a biography full of “seemingly” self effacing statements. There were a few nuggets of wisdom, but certainly not enough to support the title of the book. I would not recommend.

Not factual
I should have paid more attention when I purchased this book. I recognized her as an actress. I thought the boom might be insightful. I’m about half through. So far I find her to be a bit arrogant. Additionally she will state things as fact; when I know better that they are not. She is clearly intelligent; but I question what her credentials are to give people health advice. She is open minded in her suggestions; so that’s nice. So far I don’t like the book.

Not my thing
I struggled to even finish her book. Her voice went up and down and was so soft at times I couldn't even hear her. This book seems to be a lot more about her life and less about changes, small or otherwise. If you are looking to go vegan this book may be for you

Do Not Waste Your Credit
I had to rewrite a better written survey. Too many mistakes on my previously mentioned statement. Overall the book was a contridctions on plenty of her stories. I don't think she thought things out when she wrote this book. I was cringing on the stories she gave about eating gracluc and farting, and she's talked plenty openly about her struggles with eating habits but finds herself telling us how and what we should eat. I wished I hadn't paid for this book. It wasn't a good choice. In the beginning, she had my attention but I kept wanting more thinking she’ll change her attitude. But it keep getting worst and almost pointless to listen til the end. I did though 🤦🏾♀️

Many nuggets: Sharing the benefits of her conscious choices
I am amazed by the harshness in some of these reviews… Do people have to stab at fault finding (yes, I too, was surprised by her saying that onions were not a nutritionally worthwhile component of a requested vegan adaptation in a restaurant) rather than gleaning nuggets from her personal story, her shared ideas and encouragement?
Thank you Alicia for your ideas and inspiration…. And sharing your experience of the benefits of your conscientious choices.
I loved being reminded of TM and, how you experience Yoga (and identify the Pilates/Weight Training/ Meditative benefits combo!) That was quite the encouragement for me to finally follow up on my nudging towards that!
And many more nuggets throughout, as well as feeling that you sharing your personal trials and solutions, may well help others to love and care for who they actually are! So, thank you, from another Singer/Singwriter, although, I hope you won’t see this because I do not like to think of you reading the “reviews” from those who chose to denigrate your offering. 🙏🏼
