Publisher's summary

Inspired to extend a helping hand to ambitious women working in corporate America, a veteran executive offers honest, practical, slightly irreverent advice about navigating companies that are run and populated predominately by men: how to interpret their sometimes surprising behavior, avoid common mistakes, flourish with the good guys, deal with the bad guys, and nurture a wonderful, satisfying career in a non-traditional role.

Learn how to:

  • Build relationships with men one-on-one, in meetings, and after hours
  • Work a difficult room full of men and shine in the eyes of your male managers
  • Identify gentlemen, bullies, liars, and predators
  • Detect a glass ceiling and sidestep a misogynist backlash
  • Get noticed for your courage and common sense and be heard
  • Avoid classic pitfalls related to conflict, emotional behavior, and sex

Critic reviews

  • 2012 National Indie Excellence Award Winner in the Business-Motivational Category
"A guide for business women who find themselves in a position of power and want to create a harmonious environment in fields where misogyny often reigns. Vital reading for any woman who wants to navigate the toxic corporate culture, it is a fine and much recommended pick for career and women's studies collections." (Mary Cowper, Midwest Book Review)

Life Lessons for Any Women Who Interact with Men

If you could sum up The Discreet Guide for Executive Women in three words, what would they be?

Honesty, Wisdom, Compassion

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Discreet Guide for Executive Women?

The final chapter is wonderful. After listening to it, I was ready to take on any challenge and trust that by staying true to myself (with a little help navigating the pitfalls), I can make the right choices to further my career.

What about Jennifer K. Crittenden’s performance did you like?

She has a very even-keel, calming voice that helps you hear and understand the message, and not be distracted by the bearer of it.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Ladies, strategize in your life and career, and you can go anywhere you choose!

Any additional comments?

The perfect book to read for anyone starting out in their career, making a change, or dealing with some difficult decisions or situations. She helps women gain the confidence to perform well in their jobs. Some very valuable life lessons. Thank you, Jennifer!

Surprise, I actually liked it

Would you listen to The Discreet Guide for Executive Women again? Why?

I never listen self-help book twice, but I would recommend it!

Who was your favorite character and why?

The author, of course. I usually do not like listening to self help books (why listen to the whole thing, I can just skim through a print book and be self enlightened!) I honestly did enjoy this book though - part of it is the author. I enjoyed her outlook on life.

What about Jennifer K. Crittenden’s performance did you like?

The author is a businesswoman, not a natural narrator, but I liked hearing the sincerity and humor in her voice that may have been lost with another narrator.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Err..I'm skipping this question

Any additional comments?

Good for women, especially if you're going through a tough time at work.

Better for younger woman, new to mgmt

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Basic 101 for newer managers. Good examples, but not really in depth enough for truely upper level executive women. The author reads the book, she has a soft, monotone voice, almost too soft and monotone for an audio book.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jennifer K. Crittenden again?

Perhaps

Would you be willing to try another one of Jennifer K. Crittenden???s performances?

Not really a performance, Non Fiction.

Nothing so novel which you might have not heard

This book is more suitable for fresh graduate than experienced executive. Most advice are nothing new.

Real Talk

Where does The Discreet Guide for Executive Women rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Thank you for writing your book Jennifer! I just finished the audio version, and really appreciate the service that it provides to so many women who need to hear "real talk".
I'm not new to the corporate world, but it is always helpful to be reminded that as women we go through an extra layer of challenges that most men do not experience. It also helps to be reminded that they have their own set of challenges, and that we must also remain compassionate about that. Your tone was right on.
It was a great refresher course, but I learned some new things as well. And, I've shared your book with some junior colleagues whom I know will benefit. Where were you 25 years ago when I needed to hear these things? :-)
Congratulations on the well deserved success that this effort is bringing your way. I look forward to your next book!
