One event; four trials; one chance to turn the tides.
If only the stakes of the Games were not so high.

There is more at play here than just ritual and magical tradition. The Paragon Games have been a feature of supernatural world, keeping order for centuries in realms where lore and magic reign supreme. However, with a new challenge on the table, lines will be drawn and teams divided.

For Lucian, the clouds of the past still gather in his mind. The loss, the lies, the enormous weight he bears under the guise of his great destiny swath him in uncertainty. Having only just returned to Valiant School of Magic after a tumultuous first year, Lucian must now ready himself for the terrors the Paragon Games’ trials have in store. The competition is fierce, and Lucian’s enemies have no intention of losing quietly. For more than just vampires, shadows, and vendettas follow the young mage as the battle between what is right and what is necessary places him at the center of a world alight. And as the darkness encroaches, the shadows grow longer....

Welcome to the Paragon Games: make your move.

Amazing story and great peeformance

I really enjoyed the narrative on this story. The main characters were well-rounded and tantalizing peeks into their background relayed in a fashion that enhanced the. story. Several unexpected plot twists kept me riveted. I actually had to listen to this audiobook twice to make sure I didn’t miss anything juicy! The performance was outstanding and really brought the characters to life.

Magical trials and the shadows of his own past!

In "The Ember's of a Dark Soul" by Ambrose Adams, expertly narrated by Matthew Hlady, the magical world unfolds through Adams's skillful prose, and Hlady's narration breathes life into the characters. The Paragon Games inject a thrilling dynamic into the story, with Lucian facing not only magical trials but also the shadows of his own past. A masterful blend of supernatural intrigue and character-driven tension, this sequel sets the stage for an unforgettable crusade against the forces of darkness.

A Disappointing Sequel

This is the second book in The Serpents Heir series … and the “chosen one” spends the bulk of the story competing in the Paragon Games (and it is very hard to avoid any comparison to the Triwizard Tournament in the Harry Potter series). Instead of Wizarding Schools, you get 6 teams of DnD classes (Mages, Witches, Druid, Paladin, Demons, Werewolves) and the goal seems to literally take out your opponents (seriously … we get lord of the flies style fight club and it is all ok). Of course … the four (4) challenges are just silly (especially the weighing of souls in challenge two).

And while the narration has improved tremendously over the previous book (new narrator), the quality of the story (and likability of the characters) takes a major hit here. Style wise, the story does a lot more telling than showing making this frustratingly boring and inconsistent. Additionally, I know it is fairly common to leverage the teenage drama and brain damage commonly found in school age children, but this seems to have jumped all the way to braindead [freaks], and that makes it all just ridiculous, trumping the few interesting elements that were actually unique to this version. Ultimately this was an aggravating story that clumsily stitches together fantasy tropes in an overly simple world-building. It loses even more points for the totally dissatisfying ending … series abandoned.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Book 2

Book two picks up a bit after book one where we find Lucien training and recovering with his newly discovered biological father. Shortly after returning to school him and his team are summoned to the Paragon Games, which left me with a Hunger Games vibe. I found the characters more likable/relatable this go around, but the story was just slow for me
Audio narration was well done and enjoyable
