About this listen

Why would you walk away from the one person you can’t live without?

As a child, Vicky Hall never had the sort of family she wanted. The least important person in her new step-family, ignored by her mother in favour of her two younger half siblings, Vicky was always an afterthought. Sitting alone at her graduation ceremony at the age of 21, she vows to create her own family and her own life, one which is full of the love and attention she has always craved.

When Vicky meets William and falls pregnant in Greece that summer, it isn’t planned. But the two of them believe they can make it work, showering their child with the love which they believe should be enough.

But when her son Theo is two, Vicky leaves him in the care of her mother-in-law, walks out of her front door and drives to a hotel where she takes a room for the night. She doesn’t return.

It’s unthinkable.

What kind of mother does that?

The kind who is hiding a story you can never imagine.

The Mother I Could Have Been is a heartbreaking story of impossible decisions and second chances, from the best-selling author of The Silent Wife and The Woman I Was Before. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Liane Moriarty and Diane Chamberlain.

Unexpected Twists and Turns

A few things took me by surprise and the overall story kept me wanting to know where things were going. At times, I liked and disliked the main character throughout the book. I found myself blurting things out to encourage the Vicky to do what I thought she should do. Which meant I was getting very involved with the story. I couldn’t listen to this one slowly over the course of a couple weeks. I enjoyed it so much I had to finish it quickly to see what would happen next. I’m going to check out this author’s other books now.

My favorite Kerry Fisher book!

This book was amazing and held my attention from the beginning! I love stories about families and how things can be perceived differently by people attending the same event. Misunderstandings that could be solved by communication. Very good book and the narrator is amazing!

scarily true to so many people's lives

thought it was slow to pick up at the beginning but I quickly became absorbed. Raw truth from so many perspectives.

One More Example of Kerry Fisher’s Multifaceted and Spot On Characterizations

Loved this book as I’m reading through ALL of her books! She captures what I would consider post partum depression with empathy and a keen eye for detail. The combination of that with the capturing of the complex relationships with mothers and daughters kept me riveted. A great combination of laughs, tears, and rooting for the main character who grows through the hurdles in her life.

I felt my own mother listening with me

Thank you for putting into words the stories of motherhood. The way we might perceive the love from our own mothers, and the normalizing of estrangement.

A gem of a book for all generations

Could not fault any aspect of this book. The pain of shattered hearts in families is never-ending, but unfortunately a growing universal truth. Kerry Fisher has delivered an excellent story and managed to empathise with this listener and surely many more who have found some solace and hope through her writing.

still my favourite author. best book ever for me

I have read all of Kerry's books. I had been waiting for this one which thru contact with her she had said she was considering writing about family estrangements. Ironically I was going to suggest the same thing as I am sadly one of those mothers cut off from her adult daughter. Kerry's book was spot on in so many ways and it really helped me see that a mother that isn't in an estranged relationship with her son or daughter could actually have so much compassion and insight as she does. Thank you Kerry so well done!. Now please tell me what you're writing next. I can't wait. I read this one again as soon as I finished it.
