As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Heralded by the New York Times and Time as the couples therapy with the highest rate of success, Emotionally Focused Therapy works because it views the love relationship as an attachment bond. This idea, once controversial, is now supported by science, and has become widely popular among therapists around the world. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Sue Johnson presents Emotionally Focused Therapy to the general public for the first time. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is to reestablish safe emotional connection and preserve the attachment bond.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

An affair: It can rob a couple of their relationship, their happiness, their very identity. And yet this extremely common human experience is so poorly understood. Adultery has existed since marriage was invented, and so, too, the prohibition against it - in fact it has a tenacity that marriage can only envy. Iconic couples' therapist and best-selling author of Mating in Captivity Esther Perel returns with a groundbreaking and provocative look at infidelity, arguing for a more nuanced and less judgmental conversation about our transgressions.

The deviously manipulative coworker or boss...Jack denies resenting Nora's rapid rise in the company, but when they're assigned to work together on a project, he undermines her. The obstructionist, procrastinating husband...Bob keeps telling his wife he'll finish the painting job he began years ago, but he never seems to get around to it. These are all classic examples of the passive aggressive man.

If we produce these emotions, it falls within our power to stop them. But we have to understand our part in them far better than we do, and that is what this remarkable book teaches.

Highly recommend this book. This author did an amazing job at giving real life examples and calling a spade a spade. If you do the work he recommends, well worth it!!!

Compatible with nonviolent communication
I appreciate the wisdom and guidance in this book. As someone who has studied and practiced nonviolent communication for over a decade, I find that this fits well and complements that approach, but with many specific and very helpful suggestions for healthy practices in relationship. I recommend it highly, not just for couples, but for anyone seeking to improve the connection in any significant relationship.

Look forward to reading it again!
There was so much relevant information that I am beginning over to process it thoroughly. I wanted to just listen the first time, instinctually agreeing with what I was hearing. I do need to begin again and take notes to properly absorb. I loved this.

Witty, clear, helpful, enlightening.
This is definitely the edition you want to get. The extra sections of the book, while valuable, don't really come out in audio. The extra bonus of having Terry Real's own voice talking about the patients that vex, delight, and enlighten him is very valuable.

What did you like best about The New Rules of Marriage? What did you like least?
Pia Mellodys model
What was most disappointing about Terrence Real’s story?
I can't believe the nerve of this man to steal his material right from Pia Mellodys Post Induction Therapy Model. He should give credit where credit is due. I hope she sues him for copyright infridement
