A portal back to Earth. Disappearing AI. The final battle has begun.
After living inside a video game for months, Clay now has the rare chance to log out. The only problem is: the game's AI guardians have run off to Earth themselves. The fate of all reality now hangs in the balance.
With new powers and a new mission, Clay and his pals have three days to trek across post-apocalyptic Earth and recapture the runaway AI guardians. If they fail, both worlds online and off will cease to exist.
Are you ready to log out?

I have a lot to say about the stupid story and plotholes and the like but spoilers are not good for reviews, so I will say. The motivation for the main video game bad guys makes no sense. The apocalypse that happens in the "real world" is stupid and would only make sense if that too was some type of virtual reality. I was hoping maybe that would be a reveal or maybe this was some AI attempted takeover or something, ANYTHING. But naw, it was stupid on stupid and just ended with cherry on top stupid.
BTW what happened to the two guys in the bunker? (they were as forgotten about almost as much as the igit main characters summons...pretty sure the flyer could have been handy at one point) Also, where there any more players still in pods on earth? Do we even care about them? How about the servers? Do we care that those are likely to fail with no maintenance? Unlike a lot of these stories with an apocalypse, this apocalypse was not long planned for and there was no information in story given for how those servers were to be maintained or how long they are expected to last.
There was possiblity here for this story. The characters were not particularly annoying. There was android technology in the "real world". There were complex AI "gods" in the game world (though lets all forget the NPCs are also just AI). Sometimes an ending can save a mediocre story, but this ending just brutalized this story. Before this book I probably would have rated it a "meh, try it on sale if you have nothing else to do". Now I would say skip it. I got it for free but am annoyed I wasted my time.
Narrrator was fine, and apparently listens to feedback as I think it was about book 5 when he stopped saying H.U.D. and just started saying "hud" like anyone who knows video game rpgs would have been screaming at him about since book 1.
It was stupid
