About this listen

This program is read by the author, inspirational business leader Russ Laraway.

From the legendary Silicon Valley manager who inspired Radical Candor, the three simple rules for creating happy, engaged teams.

Businesses everywhere are plagued by managers who seem to think that keeping their staff miserable is the best way to deliver profits. This is a failure of leadership that also hurts the bottom line; research has shown that maintaining a happy, engaged workforce consistently drives measurably better business results across the board.

In When They Win, You Win, Russ Laraway, the Chief People Officer at Qualtrics, provides a simple, coherent, and complete leadership standard that teaches organizational planners and managers how to develop incredible levels of employee engagement. The audiobook identifies three key elements: clear direction-setting, frequent coaching, and active engagement with employees on their long-term career goals.

Russ Laraway's approach to management, developed at Google, Twitter, and Qualtrics, shows the way to cultivate a happy, productive, and engaged team. Happy results are sure to follow—for you, your customers, your shareholders, and your employees alike.

Russ knows his stuff, and now shares it.

I was fortunate enough to be in Russ' org back in my Google days. The passion he has for management permeated every where in his org. His focus on a coaching environment empowered my manager to coach me into being a world class leader, instead of jetrisoning me after my early Google struggles. I'm forever indebted to Russ and the impact his management philosophy has had on me as a leader and now as a coach.

Good read, worth the time and money.

Mission, Vision, Value

Russ simplifies what the mission is for a manager, I’ve never heard it put so clearly since the first time I heard him share it. These concepts are actionable and make it possible to connect with your employees in a way that is much more authentic and real. I’ve put a few of these in practice and they were my favorite moments as a manager.

Well written, great passion, and a book you can put into practice with relative ease. Thanks for doing the research and bringing receipts Russ!

Must read for Managers

People just want to do inspired work & Managers are key to making that happen,
(people leave Managers not companies right?!) but they need more/better resources to help them.
The thing I love most about the book is not just that it gives Managers a framework that is instantly actionable, but that it outlines an inspirational way to lead teams by caring about helping the individual… and we need more of that in the world

One of the best books on Management ever!

I am a big fan of management/leadership books, and I can honestly say that this book is one of the best books on management and leadership I have ever read. I have already been using some of it in my coaching the last week or two, and I am recommending it to everyone I know.

I will be returning to this again and again.

Slightly Repetitive but with many relevant examples for my industry

the reason I wouldn't set this as 5 stars is the prolific! use of superlatives (e.g. is the MOST useful way to use praise vs. this a very useful way to use praise). I'm very much a data loving reader, so hearing emotionally charged but not backed response is tricky for me to navigate, since I'm looking for some resources I can share and if necessary do follow up research on.

other than that, very good book

Most insightful business book I’ve read

What differentiates this book for me is that Russ Laraway goes beyond what most writers consider with respect to business optimization and managerial prowess, with clear examples and context to really hammer his points home. He also expanded on the essence of what I believed great leadership to be - namely: take care of your people and they will take care of you. As a result, I now have a more evolved outlook on this.

He’s light on fancy acronyms and heavy on the things that truly matter. When I didn’t find myself nodding in agreement, it was because i was saying “oh man…I never thought about that way!” Tons of practical wisdom are laced throughout this book and it’s told in a way that’s as entertaining as it is informative. Well done, Russ!

Excellent book for all managers

I really enjoyed this book. The information is straight forward and you can start applying it immediately. I work in HR and I'm so excited to find ways to help my managers apply the information in the book. I really like the way Laraway boils down what a Manager's responsibilities are. I also really like what he says about prioritizing (listen to the book to find out!). I bought a hard copy of the book so I'd have something to go back and refer to.

I had the privilege of meeting Russ Laraway as I was listening to this book. He's passionate about this topic. That passion and the fact his personality comes through (it's not a dry read or listen) makes this book fun to listen to (fun if you are a HR nerd like me!).

Demystifies good management! Must listen!

The author does a great job of breaking down successful management to its basic fundamental elements. This is a must listen not only for managers and aspiring managers, but for anyone in the corporate workforce. Russ defines what good management should reflect. Having been a manager and an individual contributor, I agree with the premise that people just want to do great work and they deserve management that reduces friction towards that goal. You will not be disappointed!

Best Management Book Ever

This is it! Literally purchased over 50 hard copies for my entire leadership team. Downloaded the ebook after reading the hard copy because the book is so dense (in a good way) that you’ll want to revisit certain parts over and over. Where with most management books you can get 95% of the point from the intro and summary, this book is refreshingly different.
