Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

We are all interconnected—and dependent on each other to shape the world in which we live. Yet even though technology has allowed us to digitally share our lives with more people than ever, the result has been a growing pattern of personal isolation, alienation, and division. Why is this? “We are seeing the manifestation of collective trauma,” says luminary Thomas Hübl, who has reached thousands of people around the world through his teachings on mysticism and healing.

Story
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Story
Both a personal and general meditation on identity and belonging, Daniel J. Siegel’s book combines personal reflections with scientific discussions of how the mind, brain, and our relationships shape who we are. Weaving the internal and external, the subjective and objective, IntraConnected reveals how our culture may give us a message of separation as a solo, isolated self, but a wider perspective unveils that who we are may be something more―broader than the brain, bigger even than the body―and fundamental to social systems and the natural world.

As high achievers, we’ve been conditioned to believe that the path to success is paved with relentless work. That if we want to overachieve, we have to overexert, overthink, and overdo. That if we aren’t perpetually exhausted, we’re not doing enough. But lately, working hard is more exhausting than ever. And the more depleted we get, the more effort it takes to make progress. Stuck in an endless loop of “Zoom, eat, sleep, repeat”, we’re often working twice as hard to achieve half as much.

Use your head. That’s what we tell ourselves when facing a tricky problem or a difficult project. But a growing body of research indicates that we’ve got it exactly backwards. What we need to do, says acclaimed science writer Annie Murphy Paul, is think outside the brain. A host of “extra-neural” resources—the feelings and movements of our bodies, the physical spaces in which we learn and work, and the minds of those around us— can help us focus more intently, comprehend more deeply, and create more imaginatively.

Story
When a traumatic event occurs, our body triggers its “fight or flight” response. In many scenarios, the emotional reactions of this response get trapped, disrupting the feedback loop between our mind and body, leading to an imbalance in our nervous system function. Over time this can cause chronic stress, pain, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune system. This, alongside regular triggers in our everyday life, will manifest into a disconnection between our mind and body and create a constant feeling of dissociation from our emotions, with minimal control over how we feel.

Weaving the internal and external, the subjective and objective, IntraConnected reveals how our culture may give us a message of separation as a solo, isolated self, but a wider perspective unveils that who we are may be something more―broader than the brain, bigger even than the body―and fundamental to social systems and the natural world.

Compelling evidence to shift focus
The author makes it clear that, for fruitful change, we must include our bodies. That in fact, change will occur organically that way. We might know this intellectually, but the author’s presentation made it clear and riveting for me. Just naming the mechanism “biobehavioral blindspot” cut to the chase. The information is very motivating. Practical steps to use it will take some search and problem-solving to to be able to practice and incorporate it into my life. (I’m wondering if the pdf accompanying the audio version is a little light on some necessary information as well.). The author does give many examples, and a few exercises but you really need support and guidance to use the material.
Having said that, I’ve found myself already noticing default ways I hold and use my body.

Overall, I highly recommend the book. But maybe get the print version.
