About this listen

Based on the gold-standard nondrug, nonsurgical Wise-Anderson Protocol for treating chronic pelvic pain, A Headache in the Pelvis is the definitive resource for anyone suffering from pelvic pain.

Pelvic pain afflicts millions of men and women and goes by many names, including pelvic floor dysfunction and prostatitis. David Wise, PhD, searched for relief for his pelvic pain for more than 20 years. After researching medical journals and performing outside-the-box self-experimentation, he found a way to resolve his symptoms. He then joined forces with Stanford urologist Dr. Rodney Anderson in the mid-1990s, and together they treated patients and did research on what is now called the Wise-Anderson Protocol.

Often incorrectly diagnosed, debilitating, and disruptive, pelvic pain is correlated with psychological distress. Using a holistic treatment integrating physical therapy and meditative relaxation, this book guides you through understanding your pain and why conventional treatments haven't worked and describes the details of the physical and behavioral protocol that can help to heal the painful pelvic floor. At last, this life-changing protocol offers hope and help to lead a pain-free life.

Includes a bonus PDF of illustrations from the book.

Read by the author and by Fred Sanders, Rebecca Lowman, Fiona Hardingham, Andrew Eiden, Catherine Tabor, Kimberly Farr, Robbie Daymond, Will Damron, Sunil Mahotra, John Lindstrom, Mark Deakins, and Danny Campbell.

Critic reviews

“This is a book that helps patients empower themselves in their own healing. With this book, patients learn how to gain control over their chronic pelvic pain. It is not a hocus-pocus solution; it is a long-term program that must be adapted into one’s daily routine. I have witnessed firsthand how patients willing to change their behavior have been able to find healing... When I see patients after they’ve read the book I can often see a change in their faces. To understand that we have the ability to affect our own healing process can be life changing.” (Ragi Doggweiler, MD, associate professor, director of Neuro-Urology and Integrative Medicine, Division of Urology, University of Tennessee, Knoxville)

“Drs. Wise and Anderson have updated their important book on pelvic pain. This work has changed the way I think about pelvic pain. I now can find the clues in the physical exam (pelvic muscle spasm) that I had previously missed. This book is required reading for any clinician dealing with pelvic pain patients.” (Stephen Bearg, MD, obstetrician-gynecologist, past chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Marin General Hospital, Kentfield, California)

A Headache in the Pelvis is a lamp in the dark human suffering of chronic pelvic pain. This book is a precious document that will help many people.” (Robert Blum, MD, former chief, Department of Neurosurgery, Marin General Hospital, Marin County, California)

Solid useable information

We are suffering from this pelvic pain that is out of control. I say 'we' because while my husband experiences this god-awful unrelenting pain I am trying everything to make it just stop. We have gone to pelvic floor exercises and therapies, massage,
Nothing gets to the root of this. Really, all we want is for it to stop. I bought this book on Audible with solid guides including
an attached PDF file that I downloaded and printed out for our review and use. The PDF was a game changer. I will try to report back on the progress. This all started after a hernia surgery that apparently cut a nerve. Honestly, at this point, we know we can't trust the surgeon for guidance. He suggested additional surgery. My thoughts are "have you botched it the first time. why would we trust you for a second surgery "? We have to figure this out for ourselves.
A Headache in the Pelvis looks to me to be a sensible choice

Works

In an age of pharmaceuticals I was skeptical that this would work but ever since reading this I don’t have anymore chronic pain. I sometimes will get a flare up but it only lasts that day. We have so many nerve endings down there that anxiety can literally create a chronic problem. The best way to combat anxiety is with knowledge and this book delivers

A new edition of a book that saved my life

I have suffered from the condition described in this book for fifteen years. The only reason I haven't achieved full pain relief is lack of application on my part due to other traumatic life circumstances. After listening to this new edition I my motivation to try again has returned. I absolutely know this treatment is the only one that works.

Keep reading to get at least to chapters 4-6

I found the beginning of the book hard to listen too, if you do also, stay with it. There is a lot of good info for both men and women with this type of health issue. The final chapter is enthusiastic patients describes ng how it helped them, so don't skip that chapter if you are feeling discouraged. That chapter helps the book end on a positive note. The pdf download is quite brief, better if it was longer. But it is useful esp once you have finished the book .

A headache…not a real solution

Was so looking forward to reading this book but it was so technical and no too sympathetic of women’s personal pain with vaginismus!
I thought it was more targeted for men.

Short on practical technique, long on emotional impact

Though the emotional causes and impacts of chronic pelvic pain are important, the descriptions and instruction of pain management and treatment techniques are brief and mixed in with emotional information. An expanded explanation of effective treatments is needed.
