About this listen

Do you ever wonder what is happening inside your brain when you feel anxious, panicked, and worried? In Rewire Your Anxious Brain, psychologist Catherine Pittman and author Elizabeth Karle offer a unique, evidence-based solution to overcoming anxiety, based in cutting-edge neuroscience and research.

In this audiobook you will learn how the amygdala and cortex (both important parts of the brain) are essential players in the neuropsychology of anxiety. The amygdala acts as a primal response, and oftentimes, when this part of the brain processes fear, you may not even understand why you are afraid. By comparison the cortex is the center of worry - that is, obsessing, ruminating, and dwelling on things that may or may not happen.

Pittman and Karle offer simple, specific examples of how to manage fear by tapping in to both of these pathways in the brain. As you listen, you'll gain a greater understanding of how anxiety is created in the brain, and as a result you will feel empowered and motivated to overcome it.

The brain is a powerful tool, and the more you work to change the way you respond to fear, the more resilient you will become. Using the practical self-assessments and proven-effective techniques in this book, you will learn to literally "rewire" the brain processes that lie at the root of your fears.

Helpful

Any additional comments?

I found this book well structured, to the point, and helpful.

I loved that the author didn't try to treat anxiety with a cookie-cutter approach, one fits all. When it comes to anxiety, one definitely doesn't fit all.

Through short quizzes, to which you can easily give mental answers while listening to the audio book, the author helps you pinpoint what you are experiencing, names it, and gives you strategies specific to the type of anxiety you might have. I found that knowing the origin of my anxieties, putting a name to them, and knowing at least 2-3 strategies for each, is very helpful.

In fact, I'm about to purchase a book in print, in order to bookmark and reference it.

Recovering from Claustrophobia

Developed claustrophobia a few years ago, as an adult, and it surfaced while on a flight headed to a work conference. I have been on a journey to identify the cause and to fix my anxiety so that I can continue to live my life and be able to fly and travel in the future. This book was tremendously helpful in my healing. I definitely recommend it.

Highly clinical

Very informative but will have to listen again as it was a lot of information and slightly challenging for the average lay person.

good advice

the voice is very annoying in my opinion and you will need a hard copy of the book to be able to do the exercises, but other than that, it's a really good book.

Great for thoughts!

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook! I did not always write down the exercises but I still found it extremely helpful! I was able to recognize my thoughts throughout listening along. Susannah Mars did a wonderful job of narrating, her voice was soothing and was not dull.

Wow!!!

I almost cried tears at several points while listening to this book. If you suffer from excessive anxiety, this book will change your life. It is extremely well written, succinct but informative, sympathetic but never condescending, gentle but firm. This book explains how anxiety is generated in our brain, how the two mechanisms of anxiety generating differ, and provides clear and easy to follow strategies to reduce the amount of anxiety both in the moment and in the long term and change how we deal with anxiety once it has been generated. It is such a validating and encouraging book. It’s worth reading a few times. I can’t recommend this book enough.

have handbook and focus

while listening to this book I was also doing the retrain your brain cognitive behavioral therapy in 7 weeks workbook for managing depression and anxiety. I finish this book before I finish the work book. I would suggest having a workbook available by your side that is far more in-depth than this while listening to this book.
