About this listen

Evie Danvers has three beautiful, if slightly out-of-control, children; a stray cat named Dr. Moxley; and a best friend who drinks unapologetically at 9 a.m. Evie also has stage-four bone cancer and a gallows sense of humour that drives her husband, Nick, demented. Nick wants Evie to fight. Evie, on the other hand, is almost ready to die. This is not Evie’s first rodeo. She kicked her cancer twice before. But this time around, Evie knows it’s a battle she can’t win.

Instead, she focuses on avoiding her oncologist, playing wicked pranks on her mother-in-law, and getting her affairs in order, which includes hiring a nanny to take care of the kids after she’s gone. Having Julia Soanes in his house would not have been Nick’s first choice. Julia smells of memories. And sex. Something Nick hasn’t had in a while. Nick’s moral objections, however, are short-lived. The woman he loves is dying. He can honor her dying wish. Can’t he?

Lava

Story was touching but the narrator was horrible. I got the kindle to finish it. I have hear Devereux in other audio books and she was okay. Don't know what happened. I received this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

There went my heart

While I knew exactly where this story was going the author did a great job keeping the pace and things moving to keep you totally captured into the story. I absolutely loved the character of Evie and felt like she could be my best friend. Nick is the perfect husband struggling to keep it all together given the circumstances. And Julia is just the sweet character who is trying to figure out where she belongs. Given the tragic circumstances this story still packed in a bunch of wit and laughter and some shenanigans.

I think Lynn Devereux did a great job narrating this story and provided some great emotion through her voice to each of the characters.

Truly a wonderful yet tragic story that will make you a part of their family. And watch out for the lava <3

Whoa, emotional book 4.5 stars overall

This was the first book that I've read/listened to by Lissa Del aka Melissa Delport. I am a romance reader. I prefer HEA love stories. But this story suck me right in making me laugh, cry, sigh, cry, scream, laugh, cry throughout with a huge sigh at the end. It's a heartbreaking story, but not depressing. The ending wasn't what I was expecting, but I didn't hate it. But it could be open for a second book?? I hope so. That'd be an awesome romance sequel! This was well written with wonderful characters. Cheating seemed to be accepted/expected, even if not condoned, and I didn't like that aspect. That was the reason for the one star drop. Usually it's something I don't tolerate at all, but the way it's handled was palatable.

Lynn Devereux did a great job narrating. She didn't have huge voice changes so a couple times it was a little confusing. But from the story and context it was easy to get back on track. I'd love to hear her again. Her voice is smooth and easy to listen to for longer periods of time. A wonderful overall performance.

*I received a code for this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Life is a volcano, often

I am always hesitant to read contemporary romances. The formula seems to be the same in so many of the blurbs; Good looking boy meets a girl no one would ordinarily look at twice. Fortunately, "Life made of lava" tends to throw that formula under the table or in this case, into the lava.

In many ways, the book is more about surviving what life throws at you, In Evie's case, not surviving the third flare-up of bone cancer. Evie still has so much love to give and so little time in which to give it. Julia on the other hand, like Evie, has a lot of love to give and unlike Evie, not enough people to give it to.

This book is a romance, but take away your billionaire playboy and shy journalist graduates. I loved the romance of Evie and Nick and the almost romance between Julia and Nick. There are no love triangles, just a story about how love doesn't end when someone is no longer there, but that doesn't mean we can't love more people.

The narrator is perfect, When she recites the part of Nick, she doesn't pretend to be a male voice, but she gets the intonations and the accent 100% correct.

Overall, a great listen without the necessary paraphernalia often imagined to be the cornerstones of the genre.

I'm not crying, you're crying!

You know in the first chapter where this book will end up. The story is very much along the lines of 'Terms of Endearment' so be prepared. I loved this family. I loved Evie and Nick. I loved their story. I loved their friends. There is more truth in this listen than I'm comfortable with so I had to step away from time to time. Still, I'm a better person for having experienced this story.

The narration was hard to follow. The book went back and forth between Evie and Nick but sometimes there was no clear distinction between the voices. I found myself not always knowing who was talking.

This was a very sweet, sad, wonderful story.

Well-written read

My second read/listen from author Lissa Del (Melissa Delport) was absolutely excellent.! Narrator Lynn Devereux’s talented narration added greatly to the book’s enjoyment. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Well-written, with well-developed characters, but not my thing. This is a good book, just not my thing. Still. I’ll be reading more from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
