Publisher's summary

What hidden skill links successful people in all walks of life? What helps them make smart decisions? The answer is surprisingly simple: They know how to ask the right questions at the right time.

Questions help us break down barriers, discover secrets, solve puzzles, and imagine new ways of doing things. But few of us know how to question in a methodical way. Emmy-award-winning journalist and media expert Frank Sesno aims to change that with Ask More.

From questions that cement relationships, to those that help us plan for the future, each chapter in Ask More explores a different type of inquiry. By the end of the book, you'll know what to ask and when, what you should listen for, and what you can expect as the outcome. Packed with illuminating interviews, the book explains:

  • How the Gates Foundation used strategic questions to plan its battle against malaria
  • How turnaround expert Steve Miller uses diagnostic questions to get to the heart of a company's problems
  • How NPR's Terry Gross uses empathy questions to dig deeper
  • How journalist Anderson Cooper uses confrontational questions to hold people accountable
  • How creative questions animated a couple of techie dreamers to brainstorm Uber

Both intriguing and inspiring, Ask More shows how questions convey interest, feed curiosity, and reveal answers that can change the course of both your professional and personal life.

So very good, but why 4 stars overall?

This is such a good book that I am referring my students and colleagues to it for their professional development. But why just four stars overall? Some books require a PDF download of a section. History books must share the maps at a minimum, and the photos would be desired. This book summarizes all the questions in each category at the end of the book. PLEASE make that a PDF. It isn't something you would listen to. It is totally something we need a copy of in written form. Otherwise, this is a brilliant book with an excellent production and performance.

Ask correctly

This is a book about how to ask, how to avoid confrontation questions and build bridge questions. A book you can listen and read more than once to achieve the goal of asking questions correctly from jobs to daily life.

good book, want a hard copy

the book itself is good and thorough. The problem I had it is that it's not very good one to listen to. It's more of a reference book that I wish I could look back and reference from time to time. Worth the listen though.

Good insightful

Loved it from start to finish. Never a dull moment. The stories were very relevant and thought provoking.
Although we all understand that question asking is important but the book clealry shows it's in art and one that can be learnt and used to do better in every walk of our lives.

Survivor bias apart, still useful

The book quickly falls into the usual clichés about the super rich and super successful (Yes, yes Oprah, Bill Gates maybe I’ll be one day like you If I just do what you did) which can be annoying at times. But other than that the book offers some tips to be a better questioner and stories to motivate you to ask more. Which is something I need to do.

Great read!

Excellent book that doesn't break boundaries in knowledge or intuition but challenges readers to search for mindfulness and new approaches in conversations both meaningful and menial

Really enjoyed this!

This was a good read. I appreciated the authors great speaking voice and the insight he offered in asking questions that helped you know more and to encourage people to know each other more. If you work with the public or in the helping vocations I recommend this book! Gigi Hill

Lots of meat

I liked this book because it seemed very practical. The performance was easy to listen to and the topics flowed well. I would have preferred to read it, so I could process the material more thoroughly. It would have been easier to focus on the types of questions I was interested in and skip others that I wasn’t.
