About this listen

You talk to yourself all day long. We all do. Most of what we say carries no emotional weight, but sometimes, what we tell ourselves affects the very quality of our lives: “Of course I didn’t get that job. My father was right; no one’s going to hire me at my age.” In the 24 compelling half-hour lectures of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Daily Life, Professor Jason Satterfield will help you build your cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) toolbox, giving you the skills you need to change those stories that hold you back and that keep you from experiencing your fullest life possible. In using these tools appropriately, you will be building a life that is both more powerful and more peaceful than you had ever imagined.

The CBT approach helps us because it’s almost never just the situation that directly affects our emotional health - it’s our thoughts about the situation. No matter what difficulties we face in life, it’s how we address those challenges that makes the difference.

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Daily Life, you’ll have the opportunity to be the proverbial fly on the wall of the therapist’s office. As you see actors portraying clients, you see Dr. Satterfield discussing his thoughts about the six clients - explaining what he learns from what they do say and do not say, their body language, their willingness to take on and accomplish homework assignments, and more. He also explains which specific CBT tool(s) he chooses for each of them and why. Since several of these clients are shown in multiple sessions over time, you’ll see firsthand how they benefit from the implementation of CBT in their lives. And as you follow them, you’ll be developing the CBT tools you can use to help yourself and maybe those you love. These tools and skills will not only help you address problems, but will also help you learn to create and savor positive experiences that bring greater happiness, satisfaction, and meaning to your life.

very good example if cbt

the teacher talks quietly so I thought it would be boring so stick with it! it was so good and he does an expert job of leading real people through cbt therapy. I learned about cbt, and I also learned a lot about how to listen to others and help them. I think I'll be a better friend and parent now!

Not bad but some of the narrators are annoying.

This part of the CBT series is very informative and practical. There is nothing wrong with the informational aspects and the author does a great job giving you “how-to” guides.
However, we can agree that a bad voice can ruin an audiobook. The voice actress “Miriam” has a horrific lisp that very much annoys and distracts from the program. Bless her heart that she cannot help it but she is present throughout the entire audiobook. The Great Courses could have made a greater effort in their selections.

Good intro on how CBT is used

This really gives a good idea as to how CBT is used in clinical settings, and how the various techniques can be used by people on their own to deal with personal and interpersonal issues.

Specific examples

Thank you for the lecture presentation for CBT for daily life . The personal experiences were also very helpful. Now, let’s see if I can put it into practice by myself .

Very well done.

CBT is curious to me because it seems like you’re just rewiring your brain. The part of me that lives on ephemeral things like intuition doesn’t dig looking at the mind like it’s a computer. But it does seem more subtle than this. I’ll most likely have another listen, break out a pen and paper. something’s got me curious, better check it out . . .

An overlooked gem

I have previously listened to Doctor Satterfield's two books: Cognitive behavioral therapy and Mind-body medicine. His presentation style and approach alone is enough for me to buy his book without any hesitation, despite the book not having a lot of reviews.
I have to say that this is the best book I have read/listened to so far about self help, how to improve your life, mental being and overall happiness.
Compared to his previous book Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Which talks about CBT, it's progress and concepts behind it in more general sense, this book is full of tools and ways you can help yourself on your own. Tools that therapist use and are empirically proven to work. At the same time it would be a huge injustice to think that this is a cut and dry list that you could find with some online searching.
Doctor Satterfield's kind and understanding approach combined with his advice and troubleshooting is what makes this book really work for me personally and makes me want to start using those methods and start working on being more happy.

I am a little biased and just keep praising the book. But honestly I have read a lot of books on mental health and self help since I don't have access to therapy and have lived with chronic depression and generalized anxiety for a long time. And nothing has helped me quite as much as his first book Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and I see this as a very strong follow-up. It makes me sad that it doesn't yet have quite the recognition it deserves, and I hope that my review helps to convince you to maybe give it a try.

P.S. This book is not a replacement for therapy, if you have acess to therapy and feel that you need it, please prioritize it over any book. There are some things that you simply can't get with any kind of book.
