About this listen

In The Emotionally Abused Woman, therapist Beverly Engel introduced the concept of emotional abuse, one of the most subtle yet devastating forms of abuse within a relationship. Now Engel exposes the most destructive technique the abuser uses to break our spirit and gain control - and guides listeners on how to free themselves from the shame that can keep them from the life (and the love) they deserve.

Emotionally abused people are gradually stripped of self-esteem, dignity, and humanity - making them feel unworthy and utterly powerless to escape. But they possess a potent tool with which to combat shame: self-compassion. In this book, Engel shows how to access it. Using her highly effective Shame Reduction Program, she helps listeners jumpstart the process of recovery by offering specific steps to help heal, regain self-confidence - and ultimately become empowered enough to leave - for good.

An invaluable resource for both men and women who suffer from emotional abuse, as well as therapists and advocates, Escaping Emotional Abuse is a supportive, nurturing guide for anyone seeking to break the chains of shame, and gain the emotional freedom to create healthier, lasting relationships.

Great first step for my healing journey

When I started looking for self help books after I left a very abusive relationship I was so skeptical that anything like this could help me. Then I listened to this book and I'm so glad I did. Take this as your sign that the universe is telling you to give it a shot.

Excellent Audiobook - Suitable for Anyone

This is a very good book for any type of trauma or abuse. In particular, it's very gentle in opening you up to the discovery of more painful mechanics and aspects of what may have happened to you or those you know. I highly recommend this book for anyone. Whether they've been abused or not. Even if you yourself have not suffered, someone you know probably has. This is an excellent audiobook.

Explanations and strategies worth consideration

If the author hadn't said "You are a victim", I would have given this book a five star. That statement causes a lot of misunderstandings. Nobody deserves being labeled by another person and being pushed into a belief system. It may have been slightly more acceptable if it was worded as "on your way to being a survivor" for example. Other than that, the characterizations, explanations and strategies were good.

Is she trying to get everyone to leave a marriage??

If you are looking for a book that looks at verbal abuse on a much deeper and intellectually complex level, read “The Verbally Abusive Relationship” by Patricia Evans. Decisions to leave are much more nuanced than this book leads you to believe, and it actually pushes the idea of leaving without other serious considerations. I felt worse for reading it, I felt like a “victim” which she seems to push you to feel, which in my opinion is a weakening feeling (not saying you are weak, but a weak feeling). I see it as that I am a strong person who is struggling to get past (via leaving the relationship), or resolve problems that are individual counseling required. I may have been victimized but I am NOT a victim. Read the above book I recommend. I was able to take it much more seriously. THIS book is an author with an agenda and not the deep and nuanced knowledge Patricia Evans has.
