About this listen

You'll hate him too; Until you don't. . .

This is the story of Dan—a high school dropout who plays guitar in a heavy metal band and has a minimum wage job wearing a mouse costume. He's not exactly destined for great things.

Then Dan wakes up in another world—a world where science never progressed past the Middle Ages, and the laws of physics have been replaced by role-playing game rules. Dan makes some mistakes—some big mistakes. Dan becomes a Death Knight: a walking personification of death and darkness.

Now, Dan must fight monsters, zealots, and demons just to survive, and he must do it all alone—because everybody hates Death Knights.

Fun Break from standard LitRPGs

If you enjoy dark humor with a splash of the absurd and want something different than the other LitRPGs this one is for you. I would call it light and humorous, but it's really dark light humor. A really fun read

Liked it

Main character is a little too dumb. However it’s done well and I had some really good laughs from this book. Looking forward to the next one.

This one surprises me

I had some extra credits and was looking around for something to listen to. The sample sounded interesting but I really didn't have high hopes for this one. But this really surprised me. I had a lot of fun listening to this. By the end I was only disappointed because this is the only book in the series so far. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

This is an absolute fun

I loved how the story started and ended. The main character is a complete idiot, but he is a lovable idiot. I can’t wait for the sequel to come out.

Not bad

Worth the credit. Some fun, crude humor, some eye rolling silliness, and some gross action.

Funny light LitRPG

Not too much on stats, but very funny writing. Narration is really good, he's got great timing for this kind of thing.

It's alright

I enjoyed the main character accidently stumbling into his primary class through sheer frustration. A fun an and great approach not everyone uses well done. I however, can not stand how dimwitted the MC is by which I must must restrain myself from shouting what common contexts he is missing. I understand the MC doesn't have that much of an education, but I hope no one is that clueless.

Everything else is the atypical fantasy LiteRPG setting, explore, kill and loot and level. The supporting characters each have interesting personalities, quirks and habits and I wish we could follow them around more than the Death Knight only due to his poor personality (personal opinion)

If you have an extra credit and unsure what to use it for and you like this genre, I'll recommend this series only out of the love I have for LiteRPG and similar settings.

An other fun gem

once again Phil Thron knocks it out of the park. From teams in space to Dad's taking on everything. Phil makes everything better. This fun LITRPG is well written and deserves a listen.

Cue air guitar :)

Now, this is not a 5 star book per se. The plot is fairly standard, even for a LitRPG. The main character is a bit bland, even for a LitRPG :) and the scenery is nothing special. So the "story" rating is only at 3 in my view.
And yet, I enjoyed this book wholeheartedly and I am even tempted to rate it with 5 stars, only for the joy it gave me. And here is why:
This is a book that "knows" exactly what it is, and plays to its strengths without trying to pretend that it is some sort of great literature. It "feels" written with love (yeah, I know it sounds cringey) yet with feet firmly on the ground. And the result is amusing, slightly funny (enough for me) surprisingly non-boring adventure with music related easter eggs all around.
Speaking of these, well - it was such a pleasure to read a book that, instead of using the old and tried Game or Movies references (which can be boring), is taking a stab at using 80s and 90s metal music references and easter eggs. And I loved it. And the guy apparently knows about Mercyful Fate (with some of the chapters named after their songs) which automatically increases my rating with half a star :D Anyway - that was original (for me), and I had so much fun with it, and I am looking forward the next in the series

Totally Radical

I always know a book is good when I stop reading/listening to it, and I can't help but think about what might happen next. There are very few books that elicit an emotional reaction from me, and this has done it. The author wonderfully words parts in such a way that I feel angry or betrayed on the behalf of the protagonist. I really hope they continue the series, it's always nice to see an unconventional protagonist who maintains their character throughout the book. He's true to himself, and his thought processes are very consistent.
