About this listen

Over seven million kids in the US suffer from serious anxiety, and that figure has doubled since the pandemic. But 90 percent of kids treated for anxiety using exposure therapy are now experiencing a better quality of life. Could it be the answer for you and your family? Are you concerned that exposure therapy may be too harsh or cruel?

There are a lot of misconceptions out there when in fact this therapy approach does not have to be scary or worrying at all.

Knowing what to expect and discussing a treatment plan with a trained and experienced exposure therapist is a great option for an anxious child.

Have you tried what you can to help your child and feel like you might be at your wit's end? Sometimes dealing with a child or teen’s fears can be exhausting for the parents too. Does it worry you that their life will be so limited and restricted if you let their fears continue to control them? What kind of future could your children have when they are so scared of things that aren’t, in reality, that dangerous? What does this mean for the rest of their life?

If these are daily concerns of yours, then exposure therapy may just be the bridge between your anxious, stressed child and their happiness—and this guide will help you cross it.

In this supportive and incredibly useful audiobook, you will discover:

  • Why exposure therapy is nothing to fear or worry about, and how it can be an effective method for dealing with fears, phobias, and even PTSD
  • What to expect in each exposure therapy session, and how to find an exposure therapist who is right for you and your child
  • Some of the common reasons why anxiety therapy does not work, and how to avoid these pitfalls
  • Why children get so afraid of everyday, non-threatening things and situations
  • What fears kids have at different ages and stages
  • Just how serious childhood fears are, and how fear affects the brain, body, and your child’s future—it won’t just “go away” by itself

Critic reviews

"As a clinician with clients who are sometimes children, this book...came in handy because the steps are easy to follow and implement during therapy sessions. Seriously, speaking, the most important thing a parent wants to achieve is a peaceful home environment, and that's exactly the results you'll get." (Dr. Darnetha Chester, author, speaker, mental health therapist, and spiritual practitioner)

"The author has done amazing research and provided great tools to help. This book is great for parents, teachers, and other caregivers, really anyone!" (M. Hill, school counselor and school board member)

"As an educator of students with learning needs, I found the information in this book almost invaluable. Well-researched but also written in an easy, flowing narrative style, James has really come into her own here." (Rob Lockett, author of Resurrection)

Valuable content for parents!

This book has incredible information for parents that have kids with anxiety and fears they are having trouble overcoming. I did not know that 90 percent of kids are treated for anxiety using exposure therapy which is mind-boggling. I would have never thought of that but its important to be open-minded and try new things. Excellent book to conquer fear and anxiety. Great book for parents!

Very informative

Listened to this audiobook for general knowledge and I am impressed. Loved its systematic approach and thoroughness. I was able to understand the science behind fear, what children fear, what exposure therapy is and how it can help a child suffering from anxiety disorder, phobias and OCDs. Also has affirmations for children and parents that they can use everyday. A must listen book if you have a child with anxiety disorder, phobia or OCD and would like to help your child overcome them. Definitely recommend.

Such a Great Resource

I highly recommend this book! The author has created a tool kit for parents of children and teens that struggle with anxious behaviors, fears, and OCD. The book has several guidelines to follow to help children and teens overcome their disorders and lead their lives. Helping parents to understand their child and their child’s perspective is key to helping them overcome their disorders. One important distinction within the book is the alternatives offered to help phobia sufferers without the use of medications. All too often parents go to doctors and are prescribed medications. By truly taking the time to understand and use the tools within this book, families can become stronger, and disorders can be maintained and overcome. This is a must listen.

Exposure Therapy for Children and Adolescents

Exposure Therapy for children and adolescents

Tantrums that become intense could be an anxiety disorder if it interferes with a childs’ life and if not addressed filters into their adult life.

Wonderful explanation of anxiety and fears and the use of exposure therapy to help the subject overcome their fears by confronting them head on, but gradually. Positive parenting such as having understanding and supporting your child and/or adolescent via encouragement can also be help.

A great audio to listen too.

It is very relevant.

We moved to New York 3 months ago because of my husband's job. My son has started to show anxiety and fear since he went to a new school. I realized that I had to find ways to improve the situation. I came across this book while searching for information on the internet and tried to read it. I learned from this book about exposure therapy and how it can be an effective way to deal with fears, phobias, and even PTSD. I also learned about the reasons why a child can be so afraid of everyday, non-threatening things and situations and what fears he has at different ages and stages. I am trying to use the theories and skills I learned from the book to communicate with my son and guide him to adjust his mindset. So far, I think it's working. I would recommend this book to any parent who needs it.

From Chaos To Calm

I must admit when I first heard of exposure therapy, it did sound a bit daunting. Mt 9-year-old daughter does seem quite anxious at times and being her dad, I want the best for her, so I delved into it more and got this book. There is nothing to fear by engaging in effective methods of therapy as the fears that children have tend not to go away by themselves.

This is a well-thought-out book with lots of great advice. Your child may or may not be helped by exposure therapy but if you are worried, it may be worth a try. This book is well-produced and the narration is good.

A must-read for parents

This book by Lulu James touches on a topic that is definitely top-of-mind for most parents of young children and teens. Anxiety, phobias and depression are ever more prevalent in kids in this day and age. Exposure Therapy for Kids provides a source of hope and much greater understanding of what kids are going through, why they are experiencing these symptoms and alternative solutions to anxiety that does not involve medication. Highly recommend!

Enlightening!

I think this subject needs to be talked about more. As a parent myself I always want the best for my children and exposure therapy might be something that can be of benefit to them. There is no need to be scared even though that is a natural thing that happens with our body. Overall I found this book to be extremely helpful!

Well done

This book gives a great breakdown on a subject that I never knew existed. It talks about how to cure fears and phobias in children. And I especially enjoyed the tricks that I could use on myself.
