Publisher's summary

Are you constantly worrying about your health, or the health of a loved one? Do you frequently check yourself for lumps, bumps, tingling, or pain? Do you find yourself endlessly looking up symptoms on the internet? Perhaps you find yourself asking others for reassurance or validation that you're okay, obsessing over health scares in the media, or monitoring your blood pressure on an hourly basis? No matter how your health anxiety manifests, it can be a crippling psychological burden. Endlessly ruminating about illness and death can affect all aspects of life—at home, work, school, as well as the doctor's office.

In Freedom from Health Anxiety, nationally recognized anxiety expert Karen Lynn Cassiday teaches you skills to conquer health anxiety, once and for all. You'll learn to switch from focusing on worst-case scenarios to appreciating the joy of the present moment—regardless of health status. Using a blend of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), positive psychology, and the author's "learned inhibition" model, you'll finally acquire the tools you need to take charge of your fear and break the cycle of stressing over your—or your loved one's—well-being. You'll also learn effective methods for tolerating health uncertainty, getting in touch with your body's cues, and rediscovering the pleasure of the present.

Condescending

While there were a few good ideas and tips in this book, the overall tone was condescending and focused too much on shaming those who suffer from health anxiety into behaving better. People suffering from health anxiety KNOW that their behavior is impacting their relationships and that doctors don't like being bugged. What if this was a book about someone suffering with depression and one of the main motivations used was, "You better snap out of it or you will ruin your relationships!"? The chapter on avoiding googling was also unnecessarily condescending--those suffering from health anxiety also KNOW that they aren't doctors, yet the compulsive behavior continues for other reasons. What they need are tools to help battle the compulsions, not lectures about how annoying and/or silly they are being. The narrator's slightly scolding tone didn't help.

Horrible

Telling someone to write their eulogy or the eulogy of a loved one is disgusting. Health anxiety is exhausting to live with and that is beyond triggering.

Regret spending money on this

I'm ready to take control of my thoughts and reign in my anxiety. I had high hopes for this book based on the authors qualifications and the few reviews but..... I wish I hadn't spent any money on it.

The author is just wayyy too focused on how your anxiety and reassurance seeking annoys those around you. It presumes that any medical professional or close confidant you interact with is annoyed by you. It's a very bleak take. I'm sorry but it's not my problem if I ask a medical professional a question more than once and their ego gets hurt because they think I don't trust them... like honestly. I'm not sure how most of this is supposed to be helpful other than attempting to incite shame and embarrassment.

It's also super repetitive and if paint drying were an audio, this would be it. There is some helpful content in here but it is piled under massive amounts of repetition and irrelevant content.
