About this listen

Borderline Personality Disorder. "What the hell was that?" raged Rachel Reiland when she read the diagnosis written in her medical chart. As the 29-year-old accountant, wife, and mother of young children would soon discover, it was the diagnosis that finally explained her explosive anger, manipulative behaviors, and self-destructive episodes - including bouts of anorexia, substance abuse, and sexual promiscuity. With astonishing honesty, Reiland's memoir reveals what mental illness feels like and looks like from the inside, and how healing from such a devastating disease is possible through intensive therapy and the support of loved ones.

Soul searching

This book paints a good picture of how awful BPD is but also the different roles it plays in the people around you. Your parents created you, they want you to be nothing like you are but yet they are the ones who masterminded your upbringing. This book shows all that. So many tearful moments. Amazing book!

Courageous and inspiring

As someone who feels that I closely relate to Tim in this book, I am grateful for the courage and vulnerability it took to write a story so raw and personal. I’m reading this at a time when my wife and I have separated. I don’t know if this is what she suffers from but I’m praying for a miracle like the one in this story. I’ve never felt so emotionally moved by a book as I have by this one. Many of the personal stories and anecdotes feeling so relatable as a supporter of someone struggling with a mental illness. We’re still so far, as a global society, from de-stigmatizing mental illness but every story told like this one that dares to tell the world what it’s like to struggle, and remove barriers, gets us closer to a world more accepting of mental illness. This story needs to be told on a bigger stage. I hope one day more people are able to hear these words and feel the pain the author poured into sharing her experience. Thank you, Rachel and Tim.

A BPD Journey from the inside out.

I keep getting diagnosed and undiagnosed with BPD. A friend recommended this book for me to more fully understand where I am. I have some of the same in we dialogue, but not the acting out bits. I actually saw more of my mom in the story except my mom was far more extreme (therapists expressed she has traits of covert, malignant, psychopathy with sadistic tendencies).

I got Brave and talked to my newest therapist about her diagnosing me with BPD; we went through the DSM with careful scrutiny. I do not have BPD, I was left with a legacy that looked like such on the surface.

This book also helped me to further understand the dynamics of and inner conflict those with BPD are going through, a side not exposed in books or documentaries, and I am grateful and can show more patience and understanding rather than instinctually running away for fear of a much more dangerous outcome.

Thank you, Rachel & family & Dr. Paget, for your contributions to this story- raw and unsensored.

Loved this book

I think this book is a beautiful, albeit difficult story, and important for anyone trying to understand mental illness and BPD. I loved Rachel’s candor, and the narrator did an amazing job of portraying both doctor and patient. Highly recommend!

Relatable

I’m a sucker when books end. I’ve been putting off the last 24 minutes and some odd seconds. Simply, because I don’t know what I listen to next. Great book, very descriptive and helpful. 😊

I can now accept my diagnosis.

Wow. As someone who has struggled for a decade with multiple diagnoses this books hits home. Before reading the book, I still thought I had a chance of fixing myself all on my own but now maybe I realize that I need more help. Thank you for sharing your personal story. It really made a difference for me!
