About this listen

Rezkin's army has been defeated, and he is among the dead.

Rising in the shadows, Rezkin is free from the shackles of power. But the darkness is his home, and there he stalks his foes. His friends, alone and scattered, face the war with an empty throne.

Rumors of Rezkin's survival spawn hope and discord on the Souelian. Unable to put Rezkin to rest, Azeria chases answers. In the criminal underworld, she hunts the Raven, willing to extract the truth in blood.

In Lon Lerésh, Yserria and Malcius become entangled in a deadly game. Rezkin's absence has left the queen vulnerable, and the nobles vie for dominance. Beneath their intrigue and machinations, a sinister plot unfolds while an ancient magic hangs in the balance.

With his fledgling empire on the brink of collapse and Caydean reigning unchecked, Rezkin must be more than an emperor. He must become the Shadow Knight.

Good addition but felt a bit rushed and not like the previous books

Some minor spoilers below.

I’m a huge fan of the King’s Dark Tidings (KDT) series and have listened to it multiple times, often while out running. It’s a fun, easy listen that keeps me engaged. That said, this latest installment felt rushed and scattered compared to the earlier books.

One of the key issues for me was how Rezkin’s progression with his newfound power was handled. He’s portrayed as mastering it so efficiently, but there’s little to no exploration of his training or the learning process. I would have loved to see some nuanced detail here—how he struggled, adapted, or discovered new techniques along the way.

Another missed opportunity was the development of his relationship with the dragon. The dragon had so much potential to be a fascinating character and a meaningful addition to the story, but it felt more like a prop in this book. Honestly, it could have been replaced by a magical item, and the plot wouldn’t have changed much.

Additionally, the book doesn’t dive deeply into Rezkin’s internal struggle with emotions. He’s starting to realize that he feels things, but there’s little exploration of how this realization affects his adherence to “the rules” or his overarching philosophy. This internal battle could have added significant depth, but instead, it’s glossed over.

Meanwhile, some storylines, like the one involving Lon Laresh, were given a surprising amount of focus. To me, these felt like secondary threads that could have been prioritized lower to make room for more impactful character and plot development.

Despite these critiques, I still enjoyed the book and am excited to see where the series goes next. It just didn’t feel as cohesive or immersive as the earlier entries in the KDT series. Kel Kade has been incredibly busy with her other series (which I also recommend if you’re a fan of KDT—it has a similar feel), so perhaps she was feeling burnt out or under pressure to release this book before the year’s end.

So glad this series has finally continued

Continues to be an excellent storyline with great depth in its character development. Please don’t take so long to release the next book.

KDT Book 5.5 not quite a Book 6

I enjoyed the book a lot, but it didn't feel like it was worthy of being book 6- maybe book 5.5.. The climax of the book felt flat compared to books 1-5.
