About this listen

Guilty of being an internet troll, Carey Walsh will pay for his sins.

Trapped in a VR pod by a vengeful billionaire with a mysterious grudge, Carey is forced to play Luminether Online, a game of magic and myth, where dying in the simulation means dying in real life.

He meets other prisoners in the game, each with a dark past and guilty of sins like Carey’s. They will join forces to escape, but none of them know the truth.

Luminether Online is more than a game. It is a mastermind with a sinister plan.

And it won’t let them go without a fight.

A story about a bunch of assholes

I understand the idea of the story is to fallow along as an asshole discovers that being an asshole is a bad thing and that he should change. I however do not enjoy reading about assholes, so the whole thing sort of, fell flat. you can have this kind of person as a side character that shows the moral of the story but as the main protagonist? nah thanks.

The game world was fine, and as always Travis was a great narrator.

Nice read

My main problem with this book was the character interactions. I can’t quite pinpoint why it felt off but it did. Other than that This is a good book with great core features and I’d like to see what the author does next.

Good intro to LitRPG genre

Let me get the negative out of the way first, the first 3 chapters waste too much time before it gets into the gaming world. The characters are all a-holes so it’s hard to stay with the book because there’s not much to like about them. However once the storyline shifts into the action and gaming mechanics with progression this is where this book shines. Absolutely loved it. All the characters do change for the better so stick with it till the end it’s worth the surprise ending.

A new age fable

Overall was a good story. Good idea for a game I would play, had the feel of Guild wars to it. The end felt kind of clumped together for me like it was trying to get wrapped up to get to the point. Not bad a bad moral lesson, however was very hammered home. And spoiler...

If no one was going to make use of the poor karma choice I think there could have been alot less time spent on those options.

Solid Unique litrpg

Was given a copy for free to review. One of my top 5 litrpgs I’ve listened to so far and I’m 50+ in. The start seems like it won’t be good but it quickly moves past and you are plunged into a fantasy world with a great story and narration. The ending twist is worth the wait and the only con I have for this book it it’s a standalone and I won’t get anymore.

I really enjoyed the book! The writer did a amazing job and really nailed the vr balance. Don't want to get to deep and accidentally spoil the surprises. Great job and I will be waiting for your next book!!!

very different type of rpg

this started out very differently and was pretty interesting. the character development was good as was their interactions. the story moved along at a good pace and overall, it was a pretty good book. the ending left me with feelings of disappointment, although others may like it. the perforce was very good.

Author's first book is good

This book has some new concepts that have a lot of potential. The protagonist is a bit of an a-hole, and the VR world is supposed to help with that by re-wiring a person's brain. It's a cool concept that, if real, would be able to help fix things like PTSD.
That said, there are elements of the story that feel rushed and other parts that seem unnecessary or pointless. The game's Karma system goes absolutely nowhere. The game says negative karma will set you down a path to become an evil version of the same character, with corresponding physical attributes. The MC's first few karma interactions all turn negative, so he should be pushed along that path a little. However, nothing comes of it.
There are a few other elements that feel rushed or unnecessary, but overall, the book was enjoyable to listen to.

Not only Worth the listen, but 5 stars to boot

Are you are going to want to punch the main character in the face for the first several chapters? YES. Is it worth the listen, absolutely. Took me a long time to get my brain to remember if you hate a character in a book or movie it great writing, or great acting, not that the character is bad. Travis does an spectacular work as always with his reading. I won't spoil the story, but it's worth a credit for sure!
