About this listen
An authoritative guide to understanding and navigating the hormonal changes and health issues women experience in midlife and beyond, from one of the leading medical experts in the field.
The physical changes that occur after women turn 40 are unavoidable - and can be unnerving. Menopause affects every aspect of life, from sex and sleep to mood and mental clarity to weight and body temperature. While there are a number of resources available, many are confusing and contradictory. Now, Manhattan gynecologist Dr. Tara Allmen, an experienced, nationally board-certified menopause practitioner and the recipient of the 2015 Doctor's Choice National Award for Obstetrics & Gynecology, shares her knowledge to help women be their happiest and healthiest and turn this challenging time into an exciting one.
Written in her effervescent yet assured voice, Menopause Confidential provides simple strategies and cutting-edge information on:
- Hormonal changes and the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause
- The health risks associated with midlife - from cutting through the conflicting opinions and advice about health screenings (do I really need a colonoscopy? How often should I get a mammogram?) to common medical conditions, such as osteoporosis
- Various remedies, both allopathic and natural, to combat symptoms and empower women to make the best choices for their individual needs
- Practical tips and resources for mitigating the effects of menopause
Fifty-one-year-old Dr. Allmen knows firsthand what women are going through and shares stories of her own personal travails and solutions. Women can't turn back the clock, but they can take control of their health and flourish in midlife. Menopause Confidential encourages them to be informed, be proactive, and be their greatest selves.

Story
The only thing predictable about menopause is its unpredictability. Factor in widespread misinformation, a lack of research, and the culture of shame around women's bodies, and it's no wonder women are unsure what to expect during the menopause transition and beyond. Menopause is not a disease - it's a planned change, like puberty. And just like puberty, we should be educated on what's to come years in advance, rather than the current practice of leaving people on their own with bothersome symptoms and too much conflicting information.

With The Hormone Fix, you can expect to trim down, tap into new and unexpected energy levels, enhance intimacy, and completely revitalize your life!

Story
Though Michelle Miller was an award-winning broadcast journalist for CBS News, few people in her life knew the painful secret she carried: her mother had abandoned her at birth. Los Angeles in 1967 was deeply segregated, and her mother—a Chicana hospital administrator who presented as white, had kept her affair with Michelle’s father, Dr. Ross Miller, a married trauma surgeon and Compton’s first Black city councilman—hidden, along with the unplanned pregnancy. Raised largely by her father and her paternal grandmother, Michelle had no knowledge of the woman whose genes she shared. Then, fate intervened when Michelle was twenty-two. As her father lay stricken with cancer, he told her, “Go and find your mother.”

When Ada Calhoun found herself in the throes of a midlife crisis, she thought that she had no right to complain. She was married with children and a good career. So why did she feel miserable? And why did it seem that other Generation X women were miserable, too? Calhoun decided to find some answers. She looked into housing costs, HR trends, credit card debt averages, and divorce data. At every turn, she saw a pattern: sandwiched between the Boomers and Millennials, Gen X women were facing new problems as they entered middle age, problems that were being largely overlooked.

Like listening to a friend…who happens to be an expert!
Dr. Allmen speaks plainly and with thoughtful, humorous directness.
I’m so glad I found this book—now that I’ve been listening, I plan to purchase the actual book!
Perimenopause (and menopause) are much less scary to me now.
Thank you, Dr. Allmen!

ITunes is bad, Cloud Player needs improvement
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, it has comprehensive information about the process.
What other book might you compare Menopause Confidential to and why?
It's the first one I read about the subject.
What didn’t you like about Tara Allmen’s performance?
She was fine. What I did not like and found not user friendly at all was the listening interface
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Maybe a documentary
Any additional comments?
Do not use Audible books on iTunes. It's terrible. The audio stopped at one point and I was not able to reload o get back to the last position heard. Then I tried the Cloud Player, but first you have to allow the website to use Flash, so it will work. iCloud allows you to chose which chapter you want to listen to, but you only get the number of the chapter and not the title. I think it would be very useful and basic to have that information. I'm not so happy with my first Audible experience. It's not user friendly.

Helpful and informative
I listened to this audiobook in one day. I’m new to the idea of menopause and wanted to learn a lot more about it. The author is a NAMS certified practitioner and very knowledgeable about middle ages womens health. Definitely do recommend reading this if you are confused and scared about all the options out there. I’m going to be reading more, but this is a great start.

Menopause Confidential: Priceless!
What made the experience of listening to Menopause Confidential the most enjoyable?
I first bought this book exactly one week ago on Audible.com. I am now finished with the book. It is bittersweet. What will I listen to next? This book has been SO informative! It has answered all my questions and more. I am at the beginning of my peri menopausal journey so I plan on listening to this book again in a couple of years as I progress through this phase of life. Every topic is covered from the inside out and everything in between. I highly recommend this book no matter where you are in this journey. Plus, Dr. Allmen is there for you! I had posted a question on her blog. Within hours she emailed me to ask for my phone number. Once I gave her my phone number, she called me within 2 hours and gave me personal advice. I appreciate her dedication to her career of helping women in their midlife health.

I was always so good at focusing, what happened?
Would you consider the audio edition of Menopause Confidential to be better than the print version?
YES YES YES...there is nothing like hearing Dr. Allmens witty repertoire in her reading of this amazing midlife, health go-to book of information!
What did you like best about this story?
So many wonderful points in the story... Dr Allmen's ability to connect with us on a personal level and professional level with humor and fact shines throughout this program! What did I like best? Each of us will find a story in this book that resonates with us, Menofog, dementia, hotflashes, no rest for the weary !
What about Tara Allmen’s performance did you like?
Humor for sure...personal connective stories and professional facts make you happy you took the time to listen to this book!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It could be... but I listen to audiobooks during long runs so I wanted to preserve some chapters for later runs because it was so interesting, I was able to listen and run, learn and laugh at the same time.

Pharmaceutical endorsement all the way!
Author promotes pharmaceuticals drugs as the only choice for menopausal symptoms relief. Dismisses and discourages alternative therapies and BHRT as something almost not worth of even mentioning. Missed several important symptoms and has weird and condescending humor.
