“Pulse-pounding locked-room suspense.”—Elle
“Nightwatching is like nothing I've read before. I wolfed it down in two sittings; it's amazing.”—Lisa Jewell
A footstep on the stairs. A second to react. What happens next will determine everything.
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs.
She sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway, shrouded in the shadows. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall. There they hide as the man searches for them, trying to tempt the children out with promises and scare the mother into surrender.
In the suffocating darkness, the mother struggles to remain calm, to plan. Should she search for a weapon or attempt escape? But then she catches another glimpse of him. That face. That voice. And at once she knows her situation is even more dire than she’d feared, because she knows exactly who he is—and what he wants.

She’s spent a decade treating California’s most depraved predators and unlocking their motives - predators much like the notorious Bloody Heart serial killer, whose latest teenage victim escaped and then identified local high school teacher Randall Thompson as his captor. Critic reviews
“[Nightwatching] guarantees you will stay up, as I did, way past bedtime, tearing through pages to find out what happens, or you’ll be too petrified to sleep, or maybe both.”—Mary Louise Kelly, NPR
“Tracy Sierra is an impressive new talent. Nightwatching is riveting, by turns a chilling account of a horrifying ordeal and a whip-smart snapshot of marriage, motherhood, and the female experience in a man’s world. Psychological terror at its finest.”—Gilly Macmillan, New York Times bestselling author of The Manor House
“Breathtakingly superb on every level. A proper tour de force that delivers the highest possible grip factor from first word to last, and a more satisfying resolution than I dared to hope for.”—Sophie Hannah, New York Times bestselling author of The Couple at the Table

They met when they were teenagers. Now they’re adults, and time has been kind to some and unkind to others—none more so than to Bea, the one they lost nine long years ago. They’ve gathered to reminisce at Bea’s family’s estate, a once-glorious mansion straight out of a gothic novel. Best friends, old flames, secret enemies, and new lovers are all under one roof. But when the weather turns and they’re snowed in at the edge of eternity, there’s nowhere left to hide from their shared history. As the walls close in, the pretense of normality gives way to long-buried grief, bitterness, and rage.

Good stuff
This story dove straight to the center of every mother’s worst nightmare. Like other reviewers, there were points that dragged on unnecessarily. But there was a point in the story that struck such primal feelings within me, which every mother would recognize, that I almost didnt continue on. I’m so glad that I did. I’ve never had a book strike me so deeply during one particular scene. It’s worth a listen if you don’t mind staring directly into your nightmares, as a mother.

Really great writing with an intriguing plot
I loved this book! Very intriguing plot line that kept me in a state of anxiety toward the end. Although none of the characters were given names throughout the entirety of the book, I was able to develop a connection with them, especially the main character. Loved the setting, too. I highly recommend it!

Loved it
The story was chilling, but I'm convinced Emily Ellet just took that up to level 100 on it. The way she told it was pure perfection. If they ever make this into a TV Show/Movie, I would want her narrating/Acting in it. This story was so good that I stayed up listening to it, I just had to know how it ended. There were moments in the beginning i had to walk away from the intensity. Very well written story and the acting in this just made it that much better.
