“Pulse-pounding locked-room suspense.”—Elle

Nightwatching is like nothing I've read before. I wolfed it down in two sittings; it's amazing.”—Lisa Jewell

A footstep on the stairs. A second to react. What happens next will determine everything.

Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs.

She sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway, shrouded in the shadows. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall. There they hide as the man searches for them, trying to tempt the children out with promises and scare the mother into surrender.

In the suffocating darkness, the mother struggles to remain calm, to plan. Should she search for a weapon or attempt escape? But then she catches another glimpse of him. That face. That voice. And at once she knows her situation is even more dire than she’d feared, because she knows exactly who he is—and what he wants.

Critic reviews

“[Nightwatching] guarantees you will stay up, as I did, way past bedtime, tearing through pages to find out what happens, or you’ll be too petrified to sleep, or maybe both.”—Mary Louise Kelly, NPR

“Tracy Sierra is an impressive new talent. Nightwatching is riveting, by turns a chilling account of a horrifying ordeal and a whip-smart snapshot of marriage, motherhood, and the female experience in a man’s world. Psychological terror at its finest.”—Gilly Macmillan, New York Times bestselling author of The Manor House

“Breathtakingly superb on every level. A proper tour de force that delivers the highest possible grip factor from first word to last, and a more satisfying resolution than I dared to hope for.”—Sophie Hannah, New York Times bestselling author of The Couple at the Table

Too much audible introspection and characters not realistic especially the cops who were obviously sexist idiots.

Opening was grabbing

This was so well written and narrated-goosebump-inducing! Great ending! I look forward to the author’s next book.

It was good, slow in parts, but definitely worth a listen. The Narrator was absolutely amazing. I listen to a lot of books, and just wow.

Narrator was fantastic

i can’t wait to hear more from this author!!!! I was hooked the first second into the book. Amazing story telling and kept me listening all the way to the end. One of my quickest listens of a book in a long time i couldn’t stop listening to it!!! The narrator did a phenomenal job of bringing brining emotion and fear to her audience!

GRIPPING

One of the scariest books I’ve ever read, hands down. It freakin rules. If you love horror but find supernatural annoying and gross stuff just gross and not necessarily scary, this buds for you.

Not for the faint ones

This is the fourth out of five books some Instagram twit recommended… two were awful, this one is fairly good… She could’ve cut out probably three hours, but it definitely kept you on the edge of your seat! Cant they find a man to record the male voices?? Otherwise narraration was very good!

Too long

This story dove straight to the center of every mother’s worst nightmare. Like other reviewers, there were points that dragged on unnecessarily. But there was a point in the story that struck such primal feelings within me, which every mother would recognize, that I almost didnt continue on. I’m so glad that I did. I’ve never had a book strike me so deeply during one particular scene. It’s worth a listen if you don’t mind staring directly into your nightmares, as a mother.

Good stuff

I loved this book! Very intriguing plot line that kept me in a state of anxiety toward the end. Although none of the characters were given names throughout the entirety of the book, I was able to develop a connection with them, especially the main character. Loved the setting, too. I highly recommend it!

Really great writing with an intriguing plot
