Publisher's summary

Are you tired of worrying about what other people think about you all the time? Have you been served the wrong sandwich at the diner but you shut up and eat it anyway because you’re too nervous and don’t want to be a bother? Do you sometimes get on a bus or join a party and worry that everyone is talking about you? If you want to be yourself around people but are always afraid that you’ll just mess up and embarrass yourself, then keep reading....

We all have our inner critics, and we all care about what other people might think of us, but sometimes our inner critic becomes too overwhelming and we start worrying too much, and it interferes with our daily lives like in our jobs, our interactions with our family and friends, and when we go out in crowded places.

I know this for a fact because I spent most of my teenage life suffering from social anxiety. I would even pretend to be sick to get out of having to attend parties and would often lock myself inside the bathroom for sometimes hours on end during parties that I was forced to attend just to avoid having to mingle and be seen by people. It felt like everyone was always out to judge me, even my friends and my extended family.

The funny thing about my story is that everybody, including my parents, passed it off as me simply being very shy and private, and I really never told anyone how I really felt either, so it just went on and got worse until one day I just randomly met a person in trying to avoid some people. It turns out that that person was a therapist and told me some helpful things and pointed me in the right direction.

Sometimes what you need is just to be pointed in the right direction. Because of this chance encounter, I decided to take up psychology as my major in college in order to understand myself and my issues in a more detailed way. I also decided to try my hand at creating this audiobook, Overcoming Social Anxiety, in order to help point you in the right direction just like the therapist I ran into that day as a teenager.

Here are a few things that I talk about in the book:

  • Why you shouldn’t just keep avoiding conflict - why you should be telling people what you want.
  • What shrinks don’t tell you about the causes of social anxiety
  • The secrets of Hollywood stars about dealing with their own feelings of anxiety
  • How to gain respect and acceptance, without becoming a people-pleaser
  • Harmful myths the mainstream media tells you about social anxiety
  • The biggest mistake people make when trying to overcome their fear of rejection
  • Why simply “faking it till you make it” does not help you overcome the feeling of awkwardness - what to do instead
  • Why you shouldn’t just blindly accept how people treat you

Scintillating, engaging, straight to the point.

This quick listen is packed to its brim with so many factual anecdotes. My attention was honed in because the information was so relatable. I find myself analysing my own actions from the very start. I'm happy to have bought this audible fact-punch at a time where blunt, honest, crystal clear delivery was meaningful enough to leave a permanent mark on my everyday behavioral thinking. I can say I can see this book from two points of view, the experienced in social angst, shocking halts and sudden plateaus of progression, and from the outside perspective of perhaps a novice of the effects of chronic anxiety suffering who may be seeking relief from new, unexplored, possibly fearful and degenerating experiences. Thank you for a clear and concise, eye-opening exposition. I truly enjoyed everything, especially its transitions from the deepening levels of anxiety and the end suggestion of doing something different and out of your comfort zone each successive day for an extended period of days to reawaken and rejuvenate the spontaneity that we all naturally tend to sometimes neglect and forget as our lives carry us forward evermore. Looking forward to all of the other writings available from this author!!!

Great place to start for those with social anxiety

This audiobook has a lot of great information and techniques about social anxiety and how to overcome it. As a 24 year old male, I have had social anxiety ever since I was 14 years old. It had affected my social life and social interactions for the longest time. So I found this audiobook/book is very helpful in learning background information as well as techniques on how to overcome social anxiety. Keep in mind that this book/audiobook can cater to both males and females with social anxiety.

This audiobook/book goes into detail with background information about what social anxiety is. Then it also goes into detail about ways on how to deal with social anxiety and puts the issues into perspective. The author also includes anecdotes about her experience, which was very helpful to me. It is great to know that she understands the pain points that her readers with social anxiety have.

I highly recommend this audiobook/book for anyone who has social anxiety, especially those who are looking for a place to start on their journey to overcoming social anxiety. This book is also a good supplemental resource for those who are seeking help, either with a therapist or a support group.

Fantastic

Great book. Highly recommended. You need to put in the work though. You cannot just stay home and expect to feel better.
A few of the things I really liked about this book:
- The emphasis on taking small, realistic steps towards a greater goal.
This book has some really helpful tips for troubleshooting your way around some of the usual problems .
This book is already helping me to move past this non-useful mentality with practical tips. Thank you, author!

Overcoming social anxiety

Social anxiety is a crippling mental monster that inhibits and limits your ability to enjoy life to the fullest. I can speak from personal experience. Breaking free from the chains of slavery, caused by shyness, was not easy. It took many years of therapy, reading self-help books and immersing myself with support groups. Although I have read many books on this subject matter, I can attest that this one is among the best. This book is packed with useful content that one can put into practice such as learning how to think more positive through meditation and doing things you like to do. I highly recommend reading this book.
