About this listen
National best seller
Stop for a moment.
Are you here right now?
Is your focus on these words? Or is it roaming elsewhere, to the past or future, to a worry, to your to-do list, or to your phone?
Whether you’re simply browsing, talking to friends, or trying to stay focused in an important meeting, you can’t seem to manage to hang on to your attention. No matter how hard you try, you’re somewhere else. The consequence is that you miss out on 50 percent of your life — including the most important moments.
The good news: There’s nothing wrong with you — your brain isn’t broken. The human brain was built to be distractible.
The even better news: You can train your brain to pay attention more effectively.
Stay with me a little longer and soon you will be able to:
- Focus without all the struggle.
- Take back your attention from the pull of distraction.
- And function at your peak, for all that truly matters in your life.

Story
How would you like to be calmer, less distracted, more productive, and more content at your job? You might think it would take more hours in the day, a better boss, more support, less interference, a shorter commute - and the list goes on. Most of the things we think would help are either not in our control or simply not realistic. But there is one thing we can do to achieve the qualities we seek, and it can be done invisibly and often: meditation.

Achievement often comes at a cost. Angst, restlessness, frayed relationships, exhaustion, and even substance abuse can be the unwanted side effects of an obsession with outward performance. While the high of occasional wins can keep you going for a while, playing into the always-on, never enough hustle culture ultimately takes a serious toll.

Our thought lives have incredible power over our mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. In fact, our thoughts can either limit us to what we believe we can do or release us to experience abilities well beyond our expectations. When we choose a mindset that extends our abilities rather than placing limits on ourselves, we will experience greater intellectual satisfaction, emotional control, and physical health. The only question is... how?

It's pernicious...it's diabolical...it creeps into every moment of our lives. It influences our relationships, impacts our physical body, works its way into our conversations, sparks non-nourishing behaviors, and forces us to do things we'd never want to do. It's infectious; it's relentless.... It's stress! We all know it. We all experience it. It's the human condition - but through this audiobook, you will learn to transcend it.

“Are you sure?” Whether in a court room, a doctor’s office, a gameshow’s hot seat, or a student’s desk, we are always trying to answer that question. Should we accept eyewitness testimony or a physician’s diagnosis? Do we really want to risk it all on a final question? And what should we be studying in order to do as well as possible on a test? In short, how do we know what we and others know - or as importantly, don’t know? As cognitive neuroscientist Stephen Fleming shows in Know Thyself, we do this with metacognition.

We say some people march to the beat of a different drummer. But implicit in this cliché is that the rest of us march to the same beat. We sleepwalk through life, find ourselves on well-worn paths that were never ours to walk, and become a silent extra. Extraordinary people carve their own paths as leaders and creators. They think and act with genuine independence. They stand out from the crowd because they embody their own shape and color. We call these people geniuses—as if they’re another breed. But genius isn’t for a special few. It can be cultivated. This book will show you how.

There is a new revolution happening in sports as more and more athletes are basing their success on this game-changing combination: health, nutrition, training, recovery, and mindset. Unfortunately, the evidence-based techniques that the expert PhDs, academic institutions, and professional performance staffs follow can be in stark contrast to what many athletes actually practice. When combined with the noise of social media, old-school traditions, and bro-science, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction.

Wish the meditation practices were narrated/guided
This audible would have flowed better if the details of the meditation practices for each of the weeks were narrated in a guided fashion versus saying week 1, flashlight, week 2, flashlight, etc. and then having to download the accompanied enhancement to read those details. Other than that, I found the background info on the research very interesting.

So much good in here!
I had listened to the author on Dr Brene Brown’s podcast and based on that conversation I immediately downloaded this audiobook. I will definitely be purchasing the print version so I can go back through and review, highlight, underline, and re-read the words over & over. I learned transcendental meditation 10 years ago and am on occasional meditator- even though I KNOW the benefits of it, i just don’t commit to the discipline. This book has taught me so much more about the way mindfulness works, and inspires me to make it a practice that will help me live in the chaotic space that I find myself in on the regular. So glad she did these studies and produced this book! This is such an important thing for everyone to learn and so simple to incorporate!! Highly recommend.
