About this listen

Are you preparing for a major surgery? Recent medical research indicates that guided imagery is an effective way to maximize the body's healing resources and take the worry out of surgery.

Martin L. Rossman, MD, presents Preparing for Surgery, a series of simple imagery techniques proven to benefit patients with quicker recoveries, fewer complications, less pain, and less bleeding after operations.

Includes three exercises to support a successful surgery and more rapid recovery.

Suggestions for working with guided imagery:

  • For your own safety and the safety of others, never listen to guided-imagery exercises while you are driving or operating dangerous equipment
  • A quiet, darkened place, or an eye pillow, may make it easier to concentrate
  • Try headphones or speakers if you have the choice and see which one you prefer
  • Get comfortable and feel free to move anytime to stay comfortable
  • Let your answering machine answer the phone, turn off the ringer, or unplug the phone
  • Tell your housemates that you'd like to be undisturbed for about 30 minutes unless there is a genuine emergency
  • Taking some time to write or draw about your experience afterward is a good way to deepen your experience with your guided imagery.

Essential for prep and recovery

Even now 12 days after surgery I enjoy listening to the post -surgery section of the audio. Listening has quelled the queasy feelings and helped me channel that energy back into healing. It has been particularly helpful dealing with the pain from rehab and Recovery.

helped me!

Preparing for surgery at the recommendation of a physician friend. I came out of surgery today, full hysterectomy, the initial pain right out was high but due in part to the tension response I had to the anesthesia, once they gave me meds for that with the pain meds I've been very comfortable now for 4 hours and just refused my first dose of pain meds. The ability to relax on a dime is also very helpful. I plan on continuing with the meditation for post surgery for at least a week.

Thank you, Dr. Rossman! This is a lifesaver.

I’ve struggled with PTSD-related anxiety for years, and when I found out I needed to have surgery, it spiraled into panic attacks, fear of giving up control over my body, and feelings of being traumatized all over again. Even after seeking counseling, I was desperate for anything to help me manage the day-to-day anxiety leading up to my surgery date. I thought this was a strange approach at first, but I knew it was working because it finally shut down the noise in my brain and helped me get centered and calm. After the first few times listening at night, I woke up feeling more hopeful that somehow I would make it through and be better for it. I felt more encouraged each day and often listened to the recordings multiple times. I’m happy to report that my surgery went well. My doctor said that I lost less than 2 tbsp of blood, which is something mentioned in the recording, and I woke up in less than a 3/10 pain. If it weren’t for the grogginess of anesthesia, I would hardly have believed anything even happened! I continue to listen to the post-op meditation during my recovery when I get anxious about the healing process. I don’t know how it works, but this recording helped me tap into the mind/body connection in a much deeper way than talk therapy has ever done for me. It’s done more than just help me through surgery; it has given me a new respect for my body and opened my mind to the power of my mind to do me good rather than harm. I’m so grateful for Dr. Rossman’s work.

So grateful I found this book on Audible

This book was on the suggested guided imagery list on my healthcare provider's website section for people undergoing surgery. I was both pleased and a little skeptical when I found it here - wondering if it would help with the mounting anxiety over my upcoming, long recovery time surgery.

Fortunately,it did the trick. My insomnia stopped and I became much calmer, all the while falling asleep during each session from pre-op to post-op. It definitely helped me deal with the surgical anxiety and the discomfort of recovery.

Each section was well done and I will continue to use the recovering from surgery part of the program. Add in an excellent price and I couldn't be more pleased.

Excellent guided meditations

Are use these guided meditations to prepare and go through open-heart surgery. Personally, I found them extremely useful for relaxation and coping with anxiety, and for visualizing a positive outcome. If you are considering this book for its intended purpose, I wish you great success with your surgery and recovery.
