About this listen

These days it’s hard to count on the world outside. So, it’s vital to grow strengths inside like grit, gratitude, and compassion - the key to resilience, and to lasting well-being in a changing world.

True resilience is much more than enduring terrible conditions. We need resilience every day to raise a family, work at a job, cope with stress, deal with health problems, navigate issues with others, heal from old pain, and simply keep on going.

With his trademark blend of neuroscience, mindfulness, and positive psychology, New York Times best-selling author Dr. Rick Hanson shows you how to develop 12 vital inner strengths hardwired into your own nervous system. Then no matter what life throws at you, you’ll be able to feel less stressed, pursue opportunities with confidence, and stay calm and centered in the face of adversity.

This practical guide is full of concrete suggestions, experiential practices, personal examples, and insights into the brain. It includes effective ways to interact with others and to repair and deepen important relationships.

Warm, encouraging, and down-to-earth, Dr. Hanson’s step-by-step approach is grounded in the science of positive neuroplasticity. He explains how to overcome the brain’s negativity bias, release painful thoughts and feelings, and replace them with self-compassion, self-worth, joy, and inner peace.

Critic reviews

"Rick and Forrest have laid out a simple, elegant matrix of powerful tools to grow that 'unshakable core of calm, strength, and happiness' that is the secret longing of every human heart. Speaking as both a psychologist and a fellow traveler, this is the most valuable, comprehensive book on human development that I’ve ever read." (Joan Borysenko, PhD, author of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind)

"Using practical methods at the intersection of neuroscience, psychology, and contemplative practice, Dr. Rick Hanson teaches us how we can develop durable psychological resources such as grit, gratitude, and compassion - and become resilient human beings in this modern, hectic world. If you're looking to create more calm, joy, and inner peace, this is the book for you." (Mark Hyman, MD, director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine)

Next stage of trauma healing

This book is the next stage in trauma healing. If you’ve already done a lot of talk therapy or alternative therapies and your nervous system is still dysregulated, this book offers felt-sense practices to cultivate resilience (meaning you can actually start incorporating what you’ve learned in therapy without feeling vastly overwhelmed by triggers). A good follow up book is “your perfect right”, which teaches non-aggressive assertiveness.

I just finished, and I’m starting again

The author has extensive research and information, but he distills it in a way that is understandable, and meaningful. I learned a lot from this book and I will go through it again to catch what I missed the first time.

Very insightful and helpful

This was exactly what I needed right now. Each chapter built skills that are essential and had practical applications throughout. It even had some Experience Practice times in several places.

The voice puts me to sleep Slee

The data presented is useful for identifying and evaluating behavior that is related to trauma. The techniques are valuable. I appreciate it. The tone of the presenters voice is relaxing. I can listen to 1 chapter and I fall asleep.

Rick's voice is ASMR: do not listen to at night

Love hearing the original author's voice. It is very soothing, especially for the exercises.
Great guide book to life: it covers everything, has a lot of illustrations and personal experiences peppered in, summaries, and exercises.

Helpful

Much needed message in light of our global challenge in 2020. While I do not share the author's Buddhism practice, I was able to receive so much insight and applications to enhancing my own mindful practice as a Christian. This is an audible that I will listen to again and again. I am a healthcare provider and I serve hurting and fearful patients and their families every work day. I typically come home exhausted and depleted. My days off have just been spent in catch up work at home and meeting the needs of my family. I have to replenish to be effective. For myself, my family and my patients it all begins with a calm mind and mindful approach to each day. This book teaches one how to do that and become more compassionate and resilient.
