Publisher's summary
Why do some teams thrive, while others struggle?
In the modern workplace, employees collaborate. Managers are expected to be effective team leaders and employees are expected to be valued teammates. But many teams struggle. Being part of a struggling team can be unpleasant, but it can also hurt your career and waste company resources.
In Teams That Work, Scott Tannenbaum and Eduardo Salas present the seven drivers of team effectiveness and the clearest recommendations on what really makes teams great. Applying the lessons they've learned from working with high-stakes, high-risk team situations to any kind of organization, they will dispel some of the most enduring myths (e.g., can you be both a star and a great team player?), feature the most useful psychological research, and share real-world illustrations of effective teams in action. Listeners will find actionable, evidence-based tips for being an effective team leader, a great team member, a supportive senior leader, or an impactful consultant.

Story
The Fearless Organization offers practical guidance for teams and organizations who are serious about success in the modern economy. With so much riding on innovation, creativity, and spark, it is essential to attract and retain quality talent, but what good does this talent do if no one is able to speak their mind? The traditional culture of "fitting in" and "going along" spells doom in the knowledge economy. Success requires a continuous influx of new ideas, new challenges, and critical thought, and the interpersonal climate must not suppress, silence, ridicule, or intimidate.

Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

The retired four-star general and and best-selling author of My Share of the Task shares a powerful new leadership model. Former General Stanley McChrystal held a key position for much of the War on Terror, as head of the Joint Special Operations Command. In Iraq, he found that despite the vastly superior resources, manpower, and training of the US Military, Al Qaeda had an advantage because of its structure as a loose network of small, independent cells. To defeat such an agile enemy, JSOC had to change its focus from efficiency to adaptability.

Some people bounce back in response to setbacks; others break. We often think that these responses are hardwired, but fortunately this is not the case. Stoicism offers us an alternative approach. Plumbing the wisdom of one of the most popular and successful schools of thought from ancient Rome, philosopher William B. Irvine teaches us to turn any challenge on its head. The Stoic Challenge, then, is the ultimate guide to improving your quality of life through tactics developed by ancient Stoics, from Marcus Aurelius and Seneca to Epictetus.

Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

Good info, but dull to listen to
I imagine that this book would be better in written form as a reference guide. As an audiobook, I found it rather boring and tedious. There is a commonly used template the authors use to deliver information. It usually starts with defining a term (referred to by title or acronym), followed by explanations and enumerated variations/aspects which often seem wordy and repetitive.
There are short stories to illustrate the points, which is helpful, but generally they are unengaging and unmemorable. Finally it cites studies and scientific research to support the ideas in each section. This is good to know, but it just isn't very interesting to listen to and all pretty dry and matter of fact. The continual use of numbered lists is one of my least favorite aspects that detract from the overall message. That may work good in a book, but not so much in audio.
While I do not disagree with the content in the book, it simply isn't one I enjoyed or plan on listening to again. Overall, I think the content could be delivered in a much more engaging, memorable, and succinct way for a better listening experience. If written in a different style leading with real world stories, it would work better to communicate the ideas rather than expecting listeners to understand and remember term definitions and enumerated points.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
