About this listen
Some of us are natural-born empaths - those with an exceptional gift for feeling and understanding the emotions, circumstances, and needs of others. But empathy, teaches Karla McLaren, is a universal human skill that we can all learn to awaken and use wisely. With The Art of Empathy, you will learn, step-by-step, the art of experiencing through the eyes and hearts of those around you - and to connect with and support them most effectively. Drawing on insights spanning social psychology, current brain research, and traditional healing and spiritual wisdom, this acclaimed teacher and author shows us how to:
- Discover and strengthen this natural social and emotional ability
- Prepare for empathy training by learning to identify and regulate our emotions and boundaries
- Move into the felt experience of others with authenticity and respect
- Stay rejuvenated on the empathic path through grounding, healthy boundaries, and replenishing with joy
- Improve our intimate relationships, parenting efforts, and workplace issues
- Expand empathy into our communities and the natural world
As our social landscape and ways of connecting continue to shift and evolve rapidly, empathy may be the most essential skill for navigating our emotional and interpersonal lives. The Art of Empathy provides us with the insights and training to master its many dimensions.

Story
At work, we’re taught to lead the conversation. On social media, we shape our personal narratives. At parties, we talk over one another. So do our politicians. We’re not listening. And no one is listening to us. Despite living in a world where technology allows constant digital communication and opportunities to connect, it seems no one is really listening or even knows how. And it’s making us lonelier, more isolated, and less tolerant than ever before. A listener by trade, New York Times contributor Kate Murphy wanted to know how we got here.

Being in a relationship without knowing how to share your feelings and receive your partner’s feelings in useful ways is like jumping into a pool without knowing how to swim. You can flail around all you want, but it’s not going to keep you afloat for very long—you need to be able to move in any direction at will. Like swimming, knowing how to share your feelings and respond to your partner's feelings will move your relationship in the direction you want: toward more intimacy, closeness, connection, and trust.

Story
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Story
Every emotion—even shame, anger, and anxiety—brings us vital information and wisdom. “Too often, we either repress our feelings or let them run wild,” says researcher and educator Karla McLaren. “What many of us were never taught are the fundamental skills for honoring and understanding our profound, powerful emotions.” In this new edition of The Language of Emotions, McLaren takes us much deeper than naming or managing our feelings—she teaches us to listen to the messages within each emotion, reflect on their questions, and incorporate their wisdom into our lives.

John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman are the world’s leading relationship scientists. For the past forty years, they have been studying love. They’ve gathered data on over three thousand couples, looking at everything from their body language to the way they converse to their stress hormone levels. On top of the amazing content (literally life changing), the author absolutely crushed it with her performance. It felt like a conversation rather than listening to someone read from a book. I loved it.

Phenomenal!
An absolute must read! Karla McLaren is an excellent author, she speaks/writes in such an accessible, authentic way, you feel like she is next to you just having a chat. Her message and tools are powerful and very applicable to everyday life. If you are considering it, just do it. You won't regret it! Would have loved to get the audiobook of her book 'The Language of Emotions' but unfortunately it is not available for purchase in Australia.

Fans of Compassion - try Empathy and Compassion!
Would you listen to The Art of Empathy again? Why?
Yes. There is so much information in this book. Karla McLaren seems to be creating a whole department of learning, with all of these brand new terms, and it is totally okay, in fact it is brilliant. So read it again and take notes.
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite character is the young Karla. I imagine her whispering to dogs as she sits under the table free of stimulus, because dogs are without judgment and love you no matter what.
What did you learn from The Art of Empathy that you would use in your daily life?
I learned you can present as completely uninterested and actually be burnt out empathetically but highly empathetic.

Just woah!
I loved this book. I've learnt so much! thank you for sharing Karla for helping me take my first steps into intentional empathy. My emotional partner is a hyper empath and I've always struggled to understand her. I decided to read this book as part of my commitment to be better and more supporting. It has definitely made me more aware of her needs and also my own! Some readers might find the book only helpful during the last 2 sessions because they are more hands on empathy how-to, but coming from a complete lack of emotional education I really appreciated the first 4 "intro" sessions into the world of emotions.
