Publisher's summary

What is a boutique?

A professional services firm past the start-up stage but pre-scale. Examples can be found in consulting, marketing and advertising, IT services, etc. It's basically anyone who sells their expertise.

There are 1,465,900 boutiques. This book is for owners of professional services firms. It is about what firms at scale do. It is about what boutiques need to do to scale. This knowledge gap between those at scale and those not at scale makes all the difference.

There is about two trillion dollars spent per year on professional services. Those at scale capture most of it. If you want a bigger piece of the pie, you must scale.

We are in the golden era of boutiques. The business models of your clients are being disrupted. This makes it virtually impossible for them to have all the required expertise in-house. Clients are looking for external expertise. Clients have big budgets to spend. Clients are buying from boutiques in record numbers. The sun is shining. Time to make hay.

Great Insight

I appreciated the insight this book shares, insight that draws from real world experience and hindsight. It was also nice to listen to a book doesn't waste the reader's time with fluff and repeating things like some other books on related topics do. They will have you skipping all day and I'm not talking about a happy go lucky skip I'm talking about the 30 sec ahead skip. Instead this book might have you running it back. I will definitely be returning to this for reference.
One thing that would be helpful is if the chapters had descriptive headings to make it easier to know where to return to for any given topic. However, it is broken into 3 general sections so that narrows it down. I listened to it in less than 2 days. It has great content and having finished listening I now have a much better understanding of how the industry actually works and operates. I'm excited to begin implementing the ideas in my own company.

By far the best business book for small and medium sized businesses

Greg Alexander has been able to answer all of the questions I have ever wanted to know about growing my business. What is more important to me is that he answers questions that I never thought to ask. If you are very serious about starting, scaling, and perhaps one day selling your business this book will get you there.
