About this listen

Long before the events of Stolen Tongues . . .

On the Cold Valley Indian Reservation, in the shadow of Pale Peak, Onwe Lopez struggles with the past as much as the present. By day, he watches his people abandon the Old Way as they flock to the local church. By night, he dreams of his childhood friend Akántha, who vanished from the rez decades prior.

Then, catastrophe strikes: a horrific accident brings a stranger to town with stories of unfathomable death. A ghastly figure wanders the night, peering into houses and terrorizing a tribal elder. Hideous whispers emanate from the nearby caves, beckoning Onwe inside—and promising to return everyone he's lost.

The Church Beneath the Roots is the story of a town ravaged by memory, riven by change, and haunted by a sinister presence as old as the mountain itself.

Noomi!

This feels like a crime novel though it occasionally has decent elements of horror. I much prefer this compared to Stolen Tounges.

Great Suspense

Holy cow, this is amazing. I read Stolen Tongues after reading the NoSleep story, and decided to give this a shot after that. This story is worth every penny. What an amazing continuation of that whole universe!

What a gem

This is a great prequel to stolen tongues. Expands on the lore of the imposter as well as the local tribes. The author is not indigenous but he does a great job of bringing his indigenous characters to life, exploring the complexities of life after colonialization and the impacts of that. Also it's genuinely terrifying. I couldn't put this down.

Amazing from start to finish

A fantastic follow up and prequel to Stolen Tongues. I love the way Blackwell writes. You can tell the enormous amount of heart and research that went into this book.

Church Beneath the Roots was a phenomenal follow up to Stolen Tongues. Church Beneath the Roots delves deeper into the culture and history where Stolen Tongues lacked. I enjoyed the sequel far more than the original!

Lived this more than the first!

The Church Beneath the Roots is a beautiful, tragic slow-burn. It's one that I didn't want to end because I had a great experience listening to it. I had the same feeling when I dirst read it in physical form. It's a prequel to Stolen Tongues. I enjoyed the atmosphere, which drew me into this area immediately. I could clearly picture the mountains and forests. The folk horror is written so well and sent shivers down my spine. There are haunting scenes that still live in my mind because they are truly nightmare fuel!

I knew a lot about Native American tribes before I read/listened to it, thanks to where I lived. He explains the traditions and ways of life in a respectful manner that others can understand easily. It is done naturally, so it doesn't take away from the story. When it comes to the plot, it explains much of what happens in Stolen Tongues. I felt a ton of different emotions, and I did cry a bit. The characters are complex and real. I absolutely loved this prequel.

incredible Story and Haunting Performance
