About this listen

In the beginning, there was darkness.

Before he met Callie, before he became the Bargainer, there was Desmond Flynn, the bastard son of a scribe. A boy born to a weak mother, cursed with little magic, and destined to marry a slave. But fate had something else in mind.

Till darkness dies.

From the barren caves of Arestys to the palace of Somnia to the streets of earth, this is how Desmond Flynn, a fairy who began with nothing, became the Emperor of Evening Stars.

This is a novella told from Desmond Flynn’s perspective.

Great listen

Great book, I did not care for the reader but great content from the author.

Wow

What a perspective. I didn’t know this book was from another perspective but was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed hearing the story from the other side. Can’t wait for the next book!

I didn’t realize

I didn’t realize how quickly he fell, how early he knew. I enjoyed learning more about what was going on in his head, since he kept a lot inside.

This entire series should be from Desmond's POV after this book.

This entire novella is from Desmond's POV. It was night and day difference compared to the second book. That one was a struggle. This was beautifully performed and I would have been more into book 2 if it was solely from his POV.

The Bargainer POV Novella

Changes in POV isn’t loved by everyone, but I do like to see what was going on in the mind of the love interest and what they did while the protagonist was away from them. This filled in some holes from the story since Des hasn’t told Callie all his secrets yet. Knowing for centuries he had a human mate but not when he would meet her seemed torturing and his resistance and patience once he met her to not scare her away admirable. I do love the soft side of morally grey characters when it comes to the people they treasure most.

MMC point of view

I loved that each chapter was the MMCs point of view for different snippets of the first 2 books. It also left us at the beginning of the 4th book so it fits together nicely!

Incredibly poignant

Performance is 10/10. The writing is so poignant and cutting, from the man’s perspective.

3.5*

I like this series and with each book I like it more but it hasn't made it to a full 4 star or higher for me.

I can put my finger on why.
I did like this book a bit more than the 1st and 2nd book and I'm not sure if it cause there is a different narrator or that the story has progressed enough for me to be more invested (even though this was a retelling from Des's pov)

Don't get me wrong, I'm still continuing the series though.

This should have been the first Book

This prequel was so good... I wonder why she didn't start the story from Des' point of view. i love love that we get to see/ hear the inner workings of his shadows.
This part of the trilogy... alll heart. Desmond loves deep and unrelenting.
I read a review of Rhapsodic and the person said we never get to see him being evil. Umm we did now and it was glorious!

Holy Shizzle

I have enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy - the story is compelling, the characters are well written - but this novella is probably my favorite so far. It has added a layer of insight to Des' motivation, added depth and detail to the world building of the first two books, and increased my enjoyment of the series as a whole. That is impressive for a little 2.5 series prequel. Plus, the narration is perfect! A fully fleshed out Desmond Flynn complete with backstory and inner monologue is a beautiful thing to behold. I loved this audiobook.
