About this listen

In the beginning, there was darkness.

Before he met Callie, before he became the Bargainer, there was Desmond Flynn, the bastard son of a scribe. A boy born to a weak mother, cursed with little magic, and destined to marry a slave. But fate had something else in mind.

Till darkness dies.

From the barren caves of Arestys to the palace of Somnia to the streets of earth, this is how Desmond Flynn, a fairy who began with nothing, became the Emperor of Evening Stars.

This is a novella told from Desmond Flynn’s perspective.

Dark and captivating origin story

I loved the origin story of Desmond Flynn, the fae King of the Night realm. I was drawn into this spellbinding tale and the bargainer’s world from the first sentence. From the “barren caves of Arestys to the palace of Somnia to the streets of Earth” we hear about Des’ journey and what ultimately crafts who Des becomes by the time he meets and is separated from his human soulmate, Callie, through the first book in the series, Rhapsodic, and then to the end of the second book, A Strange Hymn. The book has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, strong friendships, steamy times, real life issues, imperfect characters, dangerous action, uber protective men, secrets, plot twists, painful pasts, evil actors, supernatural beings, and love. I am very excited to read the final book in the series.

This is a single POV story. Chelsea Stevens and Nathaniel Priestley did a phenomenal job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.

New favorite narrator!

Hold my book while I search Nathaniel Priestley's other narrated audiobooks. His voice is pure auditory decadence.

How much Desmond loves his mate. All his thoughts when he is around her.

I liked all of it. Everything that happens leads to their first meeting, and the way he let's her get to know slowly as she grows was very endearing.

Love Desmond’s story

This is a beautifully voiced to really get the “other side” (Desmond’s backstory). So fun!

Des’ POV

I really enjoyed getting more background on Des and his POV of certain parts from book 1 and 2.

I love Desmond

I loved reading something from Desmond's perspective.
A lot of authors have this thing that I hate. And it's basically rewriting the entire series exactly how it happened, just taking the female name out and inserting the make name. (I'm only exaggerating a little).
This book does not do that, and it deserves double triple stars just for that. It is a unique book in addition to Des and Callie's time together.
It was interesting to read about his childhood. We knew he and his mother escaped his father and that he was with a band of rebels. But reading more into that brought his perspective on why he does things into light. And when he first sees Callie, his feels? And as he gets to know her? We already know what she's thinking, and we thought he was all aloof over there in the corner. Nay nay.
I loved it. I loved the narrator for the audio. He was new to me and he was fab.
Cannot wait to dive into the finale now!!

Great addition to the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting Des' POV through this novella! It was also really nice to get an insight into his past and how he came to be ultimately. The narrator did a great job and was exactly how I wouldve imagined Des' voice. This was a really fun addition to the series.

Must read! (& I don’t usually go for the alternate view of retelling stories!)

I’m not typically a fan of books that rehash the same story from another characters point of view but this one is the exception! I devoured this book and it definitely gives a better understanding of the Bargainer and how he views the Callie! I’m obsessed
