About this listen

Who wouldn't want to pilot giant robots for a living?

The Overdrive Corporation has announced another Selection, the exclusive tryout process for aspiring Fortress Masters. Designing maps for the Mech-battling virtual-reality RPG is Julian's dream come true, but a brutal defeat against superstar sniper called Dynamic has destroyed his confidence.

Hoping to find a stronger machine, Julian enters an immensely challenging map that promises ultra-rare Mech frames.

During the ill-fated mission, he finally learns what it takes to get better. It's not the strength of the machine that matters most, it's the skill of the pilot.

Julian rebuilds his gameplay from the ground up, seeking out the strongest opponents and the most challenging dungeons. He explores the countless aspects of Overdrive that he's inadvertently ignored.

Waiting for him is a rematch with the sniper he's never beaten, with a spot in the Selection on the line.

The first novel in the Overdrive series by Esports industry veteran R.H. Tang, The Heaven's Boxer will delight fans of LitRPG, sports stories, and mecha anime.

i was given a free copy. I gave up the first time I started listening because the beginning was strange. it went directly into a fight scene with no context. but I pushed past it and i am glad I did. this should be a new genre called VR gaming

This is a solid story opener, introducing the reader to what the world is, and explaining the "game" without clogging up the narrative with a bunch of statistics. I enjoyed it, and am excited fornthe next installment.

Heaven’s Boxer is set in a world where there is a VR competition with Mechs. The players either use their Mechs to attack or defend. Julian has been playing for a while and just missed the cut last year. He doesn’t just do it for fun, he also watches streams of live matches and past matches.

Julian has been defeated a few times and is not sure what he needs to do to get to the next level. The problem is that he also needs to get out in the world and find a job. His heart isn’t really in it though. His friend, Tyler, all of sudden gets interested in the game after Julian had pestered him. As Julian is training Tyler on how the game works, Tyler’s logical approach to things begins to influence how Julian plays the game.

When Julian and Tyler join a unique battle with a group of people versus automated mechs, he notices the others all have privacy shields on except for a whiny guy. He thinks the dad with his 2 kids with privacy shields is one of greats of the games and he is a big fan. He ends up speaking and learning from the way his hero and his kids approach the game. Julian realizes he needs to completely shift his way of thinking. And now it begins.

Big Mechs + game mechanics make this book extra fun. Loved hearing two new “voices” in the genre.

I'll start off by saying that I did like this book quite a bit. my love of Mecha helped greatly with that. saying that though the book could have used more tension or have situations in which the character had to really push himself to the edge.

A good start

The book is all about giant Mech combat. The vast majority is about PvP, but there is a little PvE. The main problem I found with the story is that there is nothing special going on. The MC is pretty normal and kind of boring. The MC has a lead into a special Mech, but never gets it and just has normal boring mechs and equips. There is no real special plot line or quest, it's just the MC playing to gradually get better over time and playing with friends and acquaintances. And that's really about it. It's pretty mediocre over all. The narrator does a fine job, not poor but not amazing either.

Interesting idea, poor execution.
