About this listen

Sam Brooks, a young superintendent with ProCon Builders, has been given responsibility for the largest and most complicated project of his career. He struggles with all of the common difficulties in construction - lack of communication, coordination issues, and other kinds of wasteful occurrences that rob his project of time and money, while leaving him and his team frustrated and overworked.

Luckily, his friend, mentor, and co-worker, Alan Phillips, brings the benefit of his experience and his knowledge of Lean Construction tools and processes to help Sam learn valuable skills for improving the operation of his project.

Together, Sam and Alan discuss the merits and explore the practical applications of:

  • Daily huddles
  • Visual communication
  • The “eight wastes”
  • Managing constraints
  • Pull planning
  • The last planner system
  • Percent plan complete

Practical Project Leadership and Team Learning

I loved reading this engaging story about Sam, construction superintendent, and his journey of discovery and growth that brought Lean ideas to life mirroring many of my own experiences.

This is a must read for anyone new or experienced with applying Lean to their projects or personal work. in design and construction. The guidelines at the end of the book are based on deep experiences by Joe and Keyan.

The observations by the Sam’s mentor in the story are real, our industry has changed. We project leaders must adapt to better serve our clients and respect the people who make ideas reality by the skill, sweat, and creativity of their work efforts.

A tool for every builder.

Book shows it's never too late to learn new methods. The layout and delivery was extremely helpful in explaining and teaching this concept. Allan was very instrumental in teaching Sam and the reader at the same time.

The book to change the Industry

Joe and Keyan did an awesome job of finally getting the lean principles and proven methods into an easy to read, entertaining format suitable for all levels. The construction industry has needed this book as we begin to turn the corner and improve the way the manufacturing industry has. I felt like they were telling my story, it is an incredibly relatable story full of examples, memorable explanations, as well as a real step by step manual with the inclusion of the lean builder playbook at the end.

Give this to your young field staff coming up, buy it for your old school Supers, share it throughout your organization, and especially share it with your trade partners- communicate the lean journey you’re embarking on with your whole team for maximum effectiveness.

Insightful

I love how they were able to weave a story and add lean construction principles into it. Currently, I'm interning, and I work in a GC firm. I see many ways in which we currently implement these practices, and areas where we can pay more attention.

The beginners guide to lean

Fantastic book for beginners in lean construction. This book contains everything the field team needs to get started. For those of you who are on the project management side, I recommend 2 Second Lean to start their lean journey and really get the basic intent of lean under belt before delving into the tools.
