About this listen

When Sylvia looks out her bedroom window at night and sees a child face down in the pond next door, she races into her neighbor's garden. But the pond is empty, and no one is answering the door. Wondering if night feeds and sleep deprivation are getting to her, she hurriedly retreats. Besides, the fact that a local child has gone missing must be preying on her mind.

Then, a week later, she hears the sound of a man crying through her bedroom wall. The man living next door, Sam, has recently moved in. His wife and children are away for the summer, and he joins them at weekends. Sylvia finds him friendly and helpful, yet she becomes increasingly uneasy about him.

Then Sylvia's little daughter wakes one night, screaming that there's a man in her room. This is followed by a series of bizarre disturbances in the house. Sylvia's husband insists it's all in her mind, but she is certain it's not - there's something very wrong on the other side of the wall.

Misery loves company

A hauntingly good tale reminiscent of Stephen King, Ruth Ware, and many others. The threads of the story reveal their importance by the end...slow burn worth but the wait.

The narrator is not good.

I’m not even halfway through this book and I’m so annoyed by the narrator’s voice. Her tone is constantly high and low. At this point I have no idea what is going on with the book.

Mysterious and suspenseful till the end!

Good book, good story, awesome characters, although I think that once read it, you will notice there are some uncomplete gaps in the story that will remain stuck to your imagination and that's the only reason why I've not given it 5 stars. Didn't like much the end due to the fact that it leaves you with some questions unanswered. If you like mystery and murders, this is a good option! Very good murderer, never bumped into such a cruel chatacter before since I'm used to reading these kind of stories all the time! Marvelous character!

Suspenseful

I really enjoyed this story, kept me in suspense. I had some difficulty keeping up with the different characters.

Ruined by narrator's Irish "accent"

I'm a fan of the author and tried my best to enjoy this story, but I had to stop listening.

The narrator has an unusual singsong voice, but worst of all are her borderline offensive, parodying Irish accent attempts. It's ridiculous that for a book set in Ireland, full of dialogue from Irish people, the publishers found a narrator who couldn't get remotely close to the accents, and couldn't pronounce even the most basic Irish names and places. She can't even pronounce the name of the town the book is set in! She just breezes through, repeatedly saying it incorrectly.

English people making a mockery of the Irish accent is unfortunately an age-old sport, and it's incredibly sad to see that here against the work of a fabulous Irish writer. Do better, folks.

Worst narrator ever!

Don’t buy it!!!
Worse narrator ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just listen to the sample. The narrator uses the same 4-7 singsong notes/cadence on almost EVERY sentence! Don’t think I can listen to it for 13 hours. Started it when I left work heading home. It was already irritating the s**t out of me before I got halfway home (15-20 minute trip). Terrible. Have to wonder if the folks at Audible even listened to it before they published it. Awful. Just awful.

A friend remarked, “She sounds like she has an umbrella shoved up her pinched british arse.”

Narrator ruined the book

I was so excited to listen to this book, but I could not get passed the narrator; No problem with pronunciation but she has a sort of lilting, sing song way of reading that actually made me cringe. Each sentence starts on a higher note and then fades to a lower pitch. I felt like I was listening to nursery rhymes.....Could not handle it so I abandoned listening after about an hour. Wanted to return the book but could not see any option for doing so.

It may well be an incredible novel but I'm not prepared to wade through the narration.
