About this listen
It’s the reason why spending time on Facebook makes us feel sad and lonely. Why expensive name-brand medicines provide better pain relief than the generic stuff, even if they share the same ingredients. And why a hospital room with a good view speeds up recovery from surgery.
The truth is the way we think about ourselves and the world around us dramatically impacts our happiness, health, how fast or slow we age, and even how long we live. In fact, people with a positive mindset about aging live on average 7.5 years longer than those without.
That might sound alarming to those of us who struggle to see the bright side, but the good news is we can make surprisingly simple changes or small shifts to how we think, feel, and act that will really pay off.
In The Positive Shift: Mastering Mindset to Improve Happiness, Health, and Longevity, Dr. Catherine Sanderson breaks down the science of thought and shows how our mindset - or thought pattern - exerts a substantial influence on our psychological and physical health. Most important, this book demonstrates how, no matter what our natural tendency, with practice we can make minor tweaks in our mindset that will improve the quality - and longevity - of our life.
Combining cutting-edge research from the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and medicine, as well as vivid real-world examples of the power of mindset, The Positive Shift gives listeners practical and easy strategies for changing maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors, so they can live longer, happier lives. These behaviors include:
- Appreciating nature, with actions as simple as eating lunch outside
- Giving to others, like volunteering
- Spending money on experiences, not possessions
Living your best life is truly mind over matter. Believe in yourself, and rethink your way to a happier reality.

Why We Act draws on the latest developments in psychology and neuroscience to explain why we act differently in groups than when we are alone, how slippery slopes begin and prosper and where the dissonance lies between good intentions and real action.

Our most commonly held formula for success is broken. Conventional wisdom holds that once we succeed, we’ll be happy; that once we get that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But the science reveals this formula to be backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around.

Today, thanks in large part to Seligman's Positive Psychology movement, it is ever more focused not on what cripples life, but on what makes life worth living - with profound consequences for our mental health.

Nearly every depressed person is assured by doctors, well-meaning friends and family, the media, and ubiquitous advertisements that the underlying problem is a chemical imbalance. Such a simple defect should be fixable, yet despite all of the resources that have been devoted to finding a pharmacological solution, depression remains stubbornly widespread. Why are we losing this fight?

Dead cats. That's the image many people conjure up when you mention curiosity. An image perpetuated by a dusty old proverb that has long represented the extent of our understanding of the term. This book might not put the proverb to rest, but it will flip it upside down: far from killing anything, curiosity breathes new life into almost everything it touches.

A Joy!
I would recommend this book to anyone. Scientific based facts to increase well being. Efficient with some humor. Having read many positive psychology books, this one is particularly enjoyable. Useful and you end the read with a smile.

Drink every time she says moreover
I enjoyed the book, I consider myself a positive person already. I read this book along with a relative to discuss the book and help them become a more positive person. I still learned a few nuggets within each chapter as well as reinforcing ones I already knew. fun game, have a sip of your drink every time she says the word moreover. 😂

Great book overall.
Loved the energy it starts with.
It gave me an immediate uplift. There were a couple of less energetic chapters but I'd recommend it any day.

Easy to listen to and easy to absorb
There are a lot of books where the audio/narration alone can be a turn off while listening. This was not one of them! I found it relaxing to listen and easy to absorb the information. There are multiple lessons and solutions in each chapter, based off different studies, to provide fact based evidence. I will definitely be re-listening to this book because I love it so much!

My life changing novel!
I enjoyed this novel and all its strong points on life and the changes you can make. In complete understanding I just would have liked more input that could have replaced the constant references that she referred to on previous chapters. But overall this book is definitely a game changer on life.

Another 'Top Shelf' library addition
My life is one of follow the dots and connect the dots. It currently has me in the role of agile coaching, which is how I came by this book. I've been trying to dive into the world of positive psychology and how to help others connect to their purpose, but I've neglected to see that I too need to connect. This book provoked much introspection and self-reflection, to where I felt an emotional healing take place. It quite literally helped me break mental crutches from my life's pain that was preventing me from helping others. Right place, right time? Destiny? Uncertain of why now this book entered my life, but it is now a top shelf favorite. Thank you Dr. Sanderson. You are amazing!

I truly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. It gave me so many different perspectives within how to change my mindset and the most positive way possible this audiobook provided me with evidence based research that proves that it is more effective and healthier to be optimistic. Such a great book. Highly recommend!
